Why do Americans feel the need to rinse after washing their dishes?

Nobody else in the world does. Well when i say world i'm referring to the UK, Australia and New Zealand of which i have actually visited. I mean nobody gets ill and food doesn't taste like soap so why? Fear of washing up liquid? Plus it wastes water unnecessarily. Why do Americans feel the need to rinse after washing their dishes?
I don't know what planet you're from but we have always rinsed our dishes. Who wants to eat off a plate with soap on it? YUCK

I grew up in a poor county in Ohio and we still had enough water to rinse the dishes with and our bodies. Why do Americans feel the need to rinse after washing their dishes?
I have a friend from Australia and he asked me the same question. We noticed when he visited and would help with the dishes, he would wash them in one part of the sink, set them aside aside in the other part and let the soap run off and then put them in the drainboard. No rinsing.

Americans just like to be extra certain that all of the soap residue is off. Over time it can dull your dishes or make them look streaked. And yes, you CAN sometimes taste a bit of dish detergent residue on the dishes. I experienced this when visiting the UK! Maybe you don't notice it because you're used to it.

I don't think this issue is worth making a big fuss over. It takes a minimal amount of water to rinse your dishes. It's not wasteful.
It's to make sure that all the soap is rinsed off. Dish soap can eat away at your esophagus and stomach if ingested and also cause diariah, so I prefer to make sure it's well rinsed! Not to mention it's horrible for your teeth after time. No biggie though..

I've been to the UK twice, both times I swore the food had hints of soapy tastes in it..... now I know why. Thanks guys,
The soap residue will make you sick and the food particles that may be in the soapy water will really upset your stomach. Why do you rinse your hands after you soap them up? Because, it is cleaner.
Oh really??? well I wondered, a few of my friends have only 1 sink instead of 2 and they never rinse after doing the dishes... and its true it does waste a lot of water.
The soap can give you diarrhea. I'd rather rinse.
LOL where did you grow up? Whats wrong with clean dishes??

We shower and rinse our bodies too, by the way

  • My bath tub clogs up with water when I am washing dishes. When I am brushing my teeth in the bathroom sink.?

I know that I have to hire a plummer, but before I do that I would like to know if there is something that I can do?My bath tub clogs up with water when I am washing dishes. When I am brushing my teeth in the bathroom sink.?
Two things you might try first. You have vents on the kitchen and bathroom drain lines, they protrude theough the roof. If you can find them, remove the cleanout caps from the sewer lines at ground level. Take a water hose and put it in the vent lines on the roof. Next put the water hose in the main clean out, working it in the line back and forth, keep pushing more hose into the line. Sometimes this will open the lines. My bath tub clogs up with water when I am washing dishes. When I am brushing my teeth in the bathroom sink.?
Get some liquid drain unblocker and use that first. Normally these are bleach based and are quite caustic and they eat through all the gunge that is trapped in the U bend of the outlet.

Take care when using this stuff as it is caustic so wear rubber glove to protect your hands. The stuff needs a while to work so best to do it overnight and then was away in the morning.

    Good luck.
if all your drains are backing up then it is the main sewer pipe that is blocked. at this point there is nothing you can do but call a plumber and have him ream out the main line. just make sure he goes all the way to the main sewer line in the street.
Try a plunger first, see link in the source.
it dosnt sound like anything you can do...the same thing is happening with my place, when they built your house and did the piping they cheated and took shortcuts, and piped together all your sinks and tubs into one pipe, so basically all the pipes meet and go into one. now the problem is, you probably have a small clog somewhere in the pipe a little after they all meet and the water is backing up, and since your tub is the lowest to the ground, it gets the backed up water first.

you can live with the pipes all connected like that, but it makes clogs (as you can tell) a major pain in the butt. get the clog fixed and eventually save the money to get the house re-piped (we are right now) all the pipes are supposed to be seperate and join to the septic tank, or sewer depending how your connected.

if you want to try somthing before a plumer, get that high powered areasol *drain-o* stuff that creats a foam, and use it in the tub (closer to the problem and it may reach the clog) if that dosnt work, you'll have to call a plumber, but hopefully it works... hope this all helps
This may be the most cost effective answer. Not the brightest, just the most cost effective.

Try washing your dishes in the bathroom and brushing your teeth in the other sink.

    God Bless

Why do my ankles always itch when I am standing at the sink washing dishes?

What you are experiencing is that you are standing still in one place for too long and your circulation is not going good in your legs. The blood is not flowing well which messes with the nerves and you get this pinchy itchy feeling. Have had it myself. Try lifting and moving your legs as you wash the dishes this will help!!Why do my ankles always itch when I am standing at the sink washing dishes?
I experience this alot also. It's very itchy on my ankles and lower calves... very uncomfortable. Could it also have anything to do with edema? Report Abuse

    You have fleas
are you doing something else you should not be doing?

Do you save more water by using a dishwasher or using a bucket or dish in your sink when washing dishes?

If you have a dishwasher, you should use it. Not only does it use less water than hand washing, but it also sterilizes your dishes.Do you save more water by using a dishwasher or using a bucket or dish in your sink when washing dishes?
My husband always claims that the dishwasher saves more water %26amp; $Do you save more water by using a dishwasher or using a bucket or dish in your sink when washing dishes?
    dishwasher
A bucket/dish in the sink uses less water, unless you run too much down the drain when rinsing; however, the dishes are hygienically cleaner when using a dishwasher. Kitchens are VERY dirty places, bacteria-wise, so the hotter the water, the better - and your hands would suffer, going into water as hot as a dishwasher uses.

The newer, more efficient dishwashers use less water than older models. The dishwasher manual will tell you exactly how much is used - it varies depending on the cycle options selected.

To reduce the potential for food poisoning, I say ';use the dishwasher!'; - and also, spray all washable surfaces and cutting boards weekly with 10% bleach to disinfect, and put your kitchen sponge in the dishwasher with the dishes!
A basin in your sink saves you more. You don't have to pay for the special dish washer cleaning fluid, or heating it to the temperatures a dishwasher requires. Not to mention the cost of the dishwasher itself.

Do you lick your dishes off as soon as you finish eating in order to get out of washing the dishes?

I have read that people in some ancient nomadic tribes cleaned their dishes by licking them off. I think that it will save on the electricity bill as well because the dishwasher will not run as much.Do you lick your dishes off as soon as you finish eating in order to get out of washing the dishes?
I find it much easier to just break or get rid of dirty dishes to get out of washing them ... don't even bother licking them clean. I make my sister throw them up super high, and I shoot them for target practice. Then I make her clean up the mess too.Do you lick your dishes off as soon as you finish eating in order to get out of washing the dishes?
You could always get a dog to do that. If you get one for free from a shelter and feed it only what it licks from plates then initial cost and maintenance are very low.

I bet that is really what those ancient tribes did, using wolves the ancestors of modern dogs.

  • Which is greener, using paper plates, or washing dishes 3 times daily?

I have a family of four, and we have 3 meals daily at home. My husband and I are debating which method is ';greener';. I believe that it's better for the environment AND cheaper to just use real dishes and wash them after using. My husband thinks that the power needed to heat water for dishwashing is equally as bad for the environment as using paper plates. Which is greener? Using paper plates 3x daily, or washing dishes in hot water 3x daily? Which is more economical?Which is greener, using paper plates, or washing dishes 3 times daily?
I think using real plates and washing them...just don't be wasteful when you're washing, like leaving the water on the whole time. I mean, the power it takes to actually make the plates and ship them to the stores, not to mention the trees that were cut down, seems like it would make a bigger environmental impact than washing dishes in hot water.Which is greener, using paper plates, or washing dishes 3 times daily?
Washing dishes. Running lots of water does not hurt the Earth.

Ask your husband where we are going to put all of these paper plates. I think he is just using this argument because he hates washing dishes. ;) Washing dishes by hand with hot wather does not hurt the Earth that much. It is much, much more wasteful to throw bags of paper plates into landfills every week. Not to mention, you cannot do half as many things with a paper plate as you can with a ceramic bowl, such as hold jello or soup. ;)

In addition to that, the hot water problem can easily be fixed by switching to solar power or wind power to eat our water. This is actually what we used to do before we had electricity. We used to heat a huge pot of it over a fire in the fireplace and then fill a washtub pot by pot. ;)

You have two queries - 1. Which is green?

    2. Which is economical?

Analyse one by one. Using real dishes - Usage of hot water reduce the quantity of water required to clean and is hygenic. Water temp need to be around 55 -60 deg C to ease out the grease due to fat/cheese/oil etc. On an average, it is considered, you require about 4 liters of hot water and an equal quantity of cold water for washing your dish (4 nos.) after every meal. Avg electrical energy required to heat 100 ltr of water from 18 deg to 60 deg C is between 5 to 6 kWh. Now you know how much is your approximate energy cost.

Reg. paper plates - most paper plates have a thin polymer lining to avoid wetting. Recycling is possible but again energy consuming. As you are aware, paper is made mainly from cellulose which mean cutting of bamboos and pines. How long we can afford to cut since we plant a few.

    Your Judgement Now!
washing plates diffidently! just because they say paper doesn't always mean you can recycle them. most brands put a thick wax covering on top to make sure grease and what not does not leak through, which makes it not able to be recycle. you would be much better off with washing a few plates in a container that can fit in the sink while filling it with hot water and a little soap.
Use a good, energy-efficient dishwasher. Scrape, but don't pre-wash. Run only full loads (so you may need more dishes!) at off-peak hours, if possible. Set washer to air-dry, or the least-heat setting. The paper-making process uses LOTS of water, so right away you're greener; then consider the energy needed to manufacture the paper, and the expense of disposal in a landfill--my vote has to go to the dishwasher.
Since you use a lot of dishes i would guess the dishwasher would be better, IF you get a high efficiency one, don't rinse your dishes before you put them in run a normal/light wash use safe soap and don't turn on the heated dry. I can't believe you wash that many dishes by hand your poor hands!! :)

p.s. make sure you cram as much in as you can
Well it would depend on if u was washing by hand or dishwasher because a dishwasher uses less water. But it would have to be washing 3 times daily unless you eat sandwiches or something you don'tt have to use pots and pans for because you will still need to wash the pots and pans so mayas well wash the plates at the same time!
I would say paper plates is worse for the economy. The total amount of plates adds up to 12 a day, which is a lot of plates to be throwing away. Instead of washing dishes 3 times a day, why don't you wait until the end of the day and wash them all together?
I would say washing plates. You can use paper plates because they decompose quickly but then they can only be used once so that is a lot of paper plates after while and a lot a trash. Not to mention paper comes from trees.
I watched from Oprah that the making of any paper products uses much electricity and causes more emissions that pollute the air, and recycling adds to that as well. So using real dishes is greener :)
Although the plates would decompose they would do so in land fill. The problem with this is that it produces Methane which is a 21 times worse than carbon dioxide as a 'green house' gas.
    PAPER PlaTES!!! Save water =)

Recycle the paper. No nasty dirty dishes sitting in your sink screaming to be washed!
if u measure it thoroughly, using paper plates were better either or washing were better
Using plates(glass or plastic) and washing them daily. Paper would just add to more litter and waste
i have no idea, but at a guess i would say washing the dishes is greener... actually im pritty sure it is
good question i think i would have to go with washing dishes three times a day.
if you do all the dishes at the end of the day, i think that would be greenest.
I think it doesn't matter.I would use paper plates. Because they're convenient. But they could be expensive from time to time. Regular plates could also be a hassle because you would have to pay for the running water and actually wash it your self. To make life easier, make a decision. If you choose regular plates, buy or if you already have one, use a dishwasher. That's what my mom does. And at the same time, we use paper plates sometimes when we don't feel like cleaning. So have fun deciding!! Good luck with everything else.
it entirely depends on where you live. In places where the is a water shortage, then paper is the better option. If water is more prevalent, then washing is the way to go.

Typically the plates will be worse because with the food on them they cannot be recycled. But water conservation can be really important in some areas - so check that out. Also you may want to check out how ';green'; your city is, in the terms of how well they recycle and the situation of it's landfills. (you should be able to contact your city/town government for this information)

When you wash, try to use ';green'; soap and use luke warm to cold water. If you're washing them immediately it's not really necessary to use hot. If you wait to do all the dishes for the day until night - then I would use hotter water to ensure sanitation. (also if you have anything really dirty, like something that had raw chicken on it - go ahead and use the really hot water). Whenever you can, don't have the water running. You can do this by filling up the sink part way with soapy water, washing the dishes and storing them in a drying rack, and then when you're all done, gently rinsing all the dished at one time, instead of rinsing each dish separately.

Also, I'm not sure of your monetary situation, but if you can afford it get an energy saver dishwasher. Those can be run every two days, which saves on water, heat and your hands :-)
ofcourse the greenest thing would be to use regular plates and washing them 3times daily (in cold water coz cold water breaks fats much better than hot water)

What type of gloves are better to use when washing the dishes,

    rubber gloves? or latex gloves?

What type of gloves are better to use when washing the dishes?
Silverlined Ansell Rubber gloves. I wear rubber gloves for extended periods of time at work, so if often actually wear latex gloves underneath my normal rubber gloves, that way the latex gloves fill up with sweat as opposed to my normal household rubber gloves, and then I just change my latex gloves when I feel like it, and its much easier to put the gloves back on again after taking them off, finger by finger, instead of having to turn them inside out. What type of gloves are better to use when washing the dishes?
Rubber is generally thicker, so if you want more grip, rubber is the way to go.

However if you want more of a ';second skin'; feel, and you want a better feel, use latex gloves.
I use none. IBut I guess since a lot of folks are allergic to latex, rubber will do. I dont think one is better than another though
Textured rubber gloves. They keep the wet dishes fro slipping out of your hands.

Why does my sister keep nodding off watching TV, washing dishes etc?

She stays at our grandma's house and I'm worried she might be taking her painkillers. or other drugs. If shes around a long time she gets irritable, she goes out for a while, returns and is calm again. in the evenings she starts getting dozy, and will nod off, often while standing up or leaning against the counter. I ask her about this behavior and she only says she is 'thinking.' I worry she might be doing drugs? Why does my sister keep nodding off watching TV, washing dishes etc?

Pray the rosary while you do them!

    http://www.medjugorje.org/rosary.htm

The fifteen promises of Mary to Christians who recite the rosary:

    1. Whoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation of the Rosary shall receive signal graces.

    2. I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the Rosary.

    3. The Rosary shall be a powerful armor against Hell, it will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat heresies.

    4. It will cause virtue and good works to flourish; it will obtain for souls the abundant mercy of God; it will withdraw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means.

    5. The soul which recommends itself to me by the recitation of the Rosary, shall not perish.

    6. Whoever shall recite the Rosary devoutly, applying himself to the consideration of its sacred mysteries, shall never be conquered by misfortune. God will not chastise him in His justice, he shall not perish by an unprovided death; if he be just, he shall remain in the grace of God and become worthy of eternal life.

    7. Whoever shall have a true devotion for the Rosary shall not die without the Sacraments of the Church.

    8. Those who are faithful to recite the Rosary shall have during their life and at their death the light of God and the plenitude of His graces; at the moment of death, they shall participate in the merits of the saints in Paradise.

    9. I shall deliver from Purgatory those who have been devoted to the Rosary.

    10. The faithful children of the Rosary shall merit a high degree of glory in Heaven.

    11. You shall obtain all you ask of me by the recitation of the Rosary.

    12. All those who propagate the Holy Rosary shall be aided by me in their necessities.

    13. I have obtained from my Divine Son that all the advocates of the Rosary shall have for intercessors the entire Celestial Court during their life and at the hour of death.

    14. All who recite the Rosary are my sons, and brothers of my only Son, Jesus Christ.

    15. Devotion to my Rosary is a great sign of predestination.

anyways-it might be fun and exciting for you to watch her wash dishes
Don't wash your dishes, caress them seductively. Light some candles and put on some romantic music.

Mabel, have I washed dishes with you before?
By the power of positive thinking.
Get someone else to do them then you can be a spectator and cheer for your favorite dish...

I turn music on. It still sucks. Especially since I have to do at least one load a day, usually two. Blech.
Do it naked with a friend.

Do rubber gloves fully protect your hands from washing dishes under extremely hot temperature water?

Yes they do, but they have to be certain kinds. I want to say, Polypropylene, but I think that's rope. If you have a Janitorial Supply, you could go there and ask the clerk,or if you have a school that has a cafeteria, call and ask them what the name of that particular glove is. I know that they use them. For washing lunch things. Please don't try and use just any gloves. I wouldn't want to think that you've scalded your hands. I don't know you,but that doesn't matter.I still don't want you hurt in any way. ByeDo rubber gloves fully protect your hands from washing dishes under extremely hot temperature water?
if they are able to resist the heat of the water used when washing the dishes then yes. if you are going to be washing dishes a lot you should put on some hand lotion before putting on the gloves so they come off easier and your hands hold up better.Do rubber gloves fully protect your hands from washing dishes under extremely hot temperature water?
It completely depends on the type of rubber gloves, some companies are cheapy... But for the most part yes.

Why is it a good idea to wear rubber gloves when washing dishes using detergents?

Detergents strip away oils -- which include the natural oils you secrete from your sebacious glands to keep your skin soft and to protect it from pathogenic bacteria. By removing these oils your hands can become dry, cracked, and irritated.

  • What is better for washing dishes, a dish cloth or a sponge? Could you explain your answer? thank you?

dish cloth. Sponges soak up bacteriaWhat is better for washing dishes, a dish cloth or a sponge? Could you explain your answer? thank you?
sponge and cloth both retain moisture and tend to spoil in a very short time. instead use a nylon wire mesh which is more hygeinic, cleans better and lasts longer. What is better for washing dishes, a dish cloth or a sponge? Could you explain your answer? thank you?
Try to get yourself one of those dish brushes with the bristles. it'll scrub better, has a handle and won't hold onto as many germs
they both hold germs. you have to wash them both to avoid contamination, but the old fashioned dishcloth lasts longer when subjected to washings...... verdict.... cloth!!!
A dish cloth is the best. Use a clean one every day. Sponges are bad news. You can get sick from the accumulation of bacteria if you don't change them and wash them often.....)(
I prefer a wash rag cause its thinner and i can fit my fingers in smaller places, + I heard that sponges hold on to grody germs and they multiply and that grosses me out.
I like a sponge and I run it thru the diswasher to clean or you can soak in in mild bleach water.
Both hold germs. You should put a sponge in the microwave for 30 seconds to kill the bacteria. And a washcloth should be used once and then washed in the laundry.

    I prefer a brush
I don't think there's a ';better'; way if you're washing dishes by hand. I am a small person with small hands. I like a small sponge with a nylon net on the outside of it. I buy them at the dollar store. They work well to get the dishes clean. I use a dish cloth to wipe down the counters, stove, table, etc. When I'm finished with the dishes, and I want to clean out the sink - I use a bathtub spray cleaner with bleach in it and I use the sponge and cloth to ensure both are exposed to the bleach. After which I rinse thoroughly and air dry. I use a new dish cloth every day or two days and a new sponge once a week. The sponges get tossed after I'm finished, the dishcloths get bleached in the wash.
    Neither....a wife is!

    Only joking .
I prefer a dishcloth over a sponge because.......millions and millions of germs live in both dishcloths and sponges after you wash dishes. I use a new dishcloth every day, and wash mine in hot water with bleach in the washing machine.

A sponge just holds onto all the germs, and spreads them around your sink (and everywhere else you use it). Unless you threw your sponge away and got a new one everyday....
The disposable dish washing clothes with the soap already in them is great, but normally I use a sponge. They just work better and are better for your hands, they may harbour germs if you don't dry them out everytime you finish using them, but I mean, dishwashing detergent should kill them, don't you think? All this hype about germs hiding in spnges and such is just a marketing scheme to sell clorox disinfecting wipes, my mom used sponges to wash her china for years, and we never were sick people, get back to being european. Their immune systems are better cuz they don't clean with horrible chemicals and they are just used to more germs anyway.
sponges hold germs i dont like em
    A dishwasher.

Soak them first, then scrub the hard junk off with a Tuffy.
Use a sponge or a wash cloth then put them in the dishwasher
I am not Real sure which is best. I have been doing house work for 25+ years and I think its okay to use either. I choose to use a wash cloth because I can buy as many cloths as I need and bleach them in the washer as much as I have too. I also know that sponges somehow GROW bacteria. I use a wash cloth every round or two of dishes. I am not afraid of germs.
dish cloth-- no sponge -- it holds bacteria.
I use a sponge, but, since they start to smell like mildew after a week, they have to be replaced often, not keen on dishcloths/brushes, but, a dishcloth would be my next choice, then it can be washed with towels, washcloths, and handtowels!

When u are hand washing dishes should u wash in cold water to kill germs.?

when u washing clothes shouldn't u wash in cold water? Doesn't cold water help with killing germs of all soughts. When u are hand washing dishes should u wash in cold water to kill germs.?
i always wash in the hottest water i can stand and then rinse in cold water. the hot kills the cooties and cold helps to have less spots if you air dry them.

Are soap bubbles important while washing dishes?

Ahhh, No they are not important while washing dishes, all you need is a little on our cloth or sponge and wash away at your dishesAre soap bubbles important while washing dishes?
when the soap ';foams'; it shows that it has reacted to the water and it's doing it's job in cleaning...

the soap must be activated by water for it to work effectively..if the soap doesn't foam then it won't work the way it shouldAre soap bubbles important while washing dishes?
    no
When doing dishes if your soap bubbles go away and that means it's dissolved all the grease it can and it's not as effective. That's why you do the dirtiest stuff last.
    no
i guess never really thought about it
It is a mind thing for me...I must have the bubbles!!!
    no
I think that they are important. Ive tried using very little dishsoap to see if i could get the same clean without so many bubbles but i never have. I think the bubbles are important for anything that is greasy or even a little bit. I think i get a better clean with lots of bubbles.
No. bubble has nothing to do with the cleaning or disinfecting your dishes.

Is hot, cold or normal water best for washing dishes?

If the things you are washing are greasy then the water should be hot almost boiling with washing up liquid, but otherwise hand hot water is alright for washing up, also i find it easier to wash up as i go, like get the pots and pans out the way as i serve up the food, then i change the water ready for the plates etcIs hot, cold or normal water best for washing dishes?
Hot water is generally known as the best for washing dishes.

Here's an article which states four reasons why hot water is the best:

    1. Cleaning Power- Washing dishes in hot water actually helps to lift away and clean dirty dishes reducing the amount of time you'll have to spend scrubbing and reducing the need for extra dish cleaning products.

    2. Killing Bacteria and Microorganisms.-Hot water is needed to effectively kill bacteria on dishes. It may seem like you can squeeze a little more use out of a dishpan full of cool water, but compromising your families exposure to bacteria is not worth the extra trouble of running a new pan of hot water.

    3. Cutting grease.- Water temperatures under about 90 degrees will leave a nasty greasy film on your dishes as they dry. Grease cutting ability is severely hampered by cool water leaving your dishes less than clean.

    4. Drying Time- Hot water dries much more quickly on dishes than warm or cool water. Dishes can essentially dry themselves if the water temperature is right. As an added benefit, dishes will dry spot and streak free with hotter water. Many people try to conserve hot water during the rinsing part of dishwashing and just hand dry dishes. Keep in mind that pools of water and wet dishtowels are a haven for bacteria. You may have just spent a lot of effort to get dishes clean only to allow them to become contaminated. Is hot, cold or normal water best for washing dishes?
I remember reading when first married on how to clean around the house (this is years ago) and one of the big things was after your strainer was loaded with the clean and rinsed dishes to Pour hot hot (heated on stove hot) water over the rinsed dishes.

I stopped doing that about 2 weeks after first reading it but the prinicple is there.

I fyou look on dishwasher you have choices on cleaning with turbo hot etc.

Steam works great to kill bacteria.
if there is only a few i use cold water with a spray bottle of ammonia and white vinegar, see to really kill germs you must have boiling water , which no one really has in there hot water system, and i've never been sick
hot water is best for washing dishes and also hot rinse water
I'd say nice and hot, it gets rid of gems and thick dirt, use a good ditergent too, something like fairy.
Hot. It gets rid of more bacteria on the dishes and cuts through food stains easier.
    Hot........only. Use gloves.
hot, it just cleans better, cuts through the grease with ease.
    hot with good soap

Is an automatic dishwasher as water efficient as washing dishes by hand?

Automatic dishwashers are more efficient than handwashing simply because they recirculate the water and whereas handwashing water is wasted down the drain and you run more waterwhen washing the dishes than a dishwasher uses Good Luck !Is an automatic dishwasher as water efficient as washing dishes by hand?
The dishwasher uses less water than hand washing. Even dishwasher without ';water saver'; features generally use much less water than hand-washing, even if you don't run the water while washing, and use minimal water to rinse, because the dishwasher pulls in a specific amount of water to mix with the detergent and circulates that around to wash, and then drains that and pulls in another amount of clean water to rinse. Usually all of the water put together is barely enough to fill a dish bucket. Is an automatic dishwasher as water efficient as washing dishes by hand?
if you're only washing one or two dishes then yes it's more water and energy efficient to wash by hand.

if you have a full load then it's more efficient to use the dishwasher. (and if your dishwasher is taking an hour to wash the dishes--have your dishwasher checked or get one that is more up to date.)
In my opinion, no. When washing dishes by hand, you know exactly how much water you are using. Some automatic dishwashers, though, do have water-saving features.
They did a survey in UK about this and came out in favour of the dishwasher. Apparently it used less water to do a full load than those dishes would have taken being hand washed. so you are saving the planet by using your dishwasher!! Yeah.
I admit that I don't have figures to back me up, but the DW takes almost an hour to do a 5 or 10 minute job. If it's efficient, I sure don't see how.
studies show that less water is used by a dishwasher than by hand, but only because most people leave the water running to rinse the dishes.
Well, it has always worked for me, as long as you don't stuff it too full.

Do you enjoy washing the dishes or is it just another chore?

Do you wash the dishes in a certain way so that it is more enjoyable. Perhaps you listen to music at the same time. Do you let it pile up loads before you wash them. Do you deligate the dishes to some one else or is it your duty to wash them.

Two sink(s) is definitely better than one.Do you enjoy washing the dishes or is it just another chore?
I don't enjoy washing dishes, but it's something that does have to be done because I can't stand a cluttered or messy counter %26amp; sink. For me personally, the dishes have to be done before I go to bed.Do you enjoy washing the dishes or is it just another chore?
    its a pain either way.
I actually like to wash the dishes. Then again it's my chore in the house. I listen to music as I do them. I usually don't let them pile up but if I do I wash the silverware first then the plates, bowls...in order from smallest to biggest. Blare the music and you'll have fun!
It's not necessarily fun. But to make it funner, start by cranking up the music. Listen to the Hairspray CD soundtrack and sing along with the people! Fill one sink up with water and bubbles. Leave the other empty. Put all the dishes in the bubbly one, then take them out, scrub and rinse them in the other sink. Put them on a dryer rack. Doing them with a friend is funner too.
i HATE washing the dishes! its the worst chore of them all! luckily my bf washes up most of them (with music on) in return i do most of the other household chores! id rather do hours of house work than wash up! he washes up once a day after tea, as we're both out through the day, so not too many!x
I don't mind washing dishes. It gives me time to think. I live in a house with seventeen others so there can be a lot but I usually volunteer. I listen to music and alternate washing and drying for different songs.
I'd rather have a dishwasher, but since I don't, there isn't much choice!

Sometimes I listen to my iPod at the same time - podcasts take my mind off the job at hand! It's best not to let it build up into a huuuuuge pile. Just do the day's washing-up at the end of the day, or whenever is convenient (daily!).
    It's just another chore.
i always have to listen to my music whilst washing up, it really makes time fly by. i wash up systematically - plates %26amp; bowls, then cups, then cutlary and finally pots pans and miscellaneous items
    yea i listen to music

it doesnt make it any more enjoyable...it just

makes it seem like it took less time
    Its a chore!!!
    Use a dishwasher
    have dishwasher
    chore...
Save up for a dishwasher. Once youv'e had one you will wonder how you managed before. They also do a far better job than you can by hand.
I hate it with a passion thats why i now have a dish washer
get a dishwasher best thing since sliced bread
It's just another chore. But now my daughters are teenagers, it's one of their chores lol

Fix some hot soapy water in your water (the hotter the better), put in

your dirty dishes and allow them to soak until you can tolerate the

temperature of the water and wash. What is the fastest way of washing dishes?
I hear ya, I am the dishwasher!

Fill up the sink with your dirty dishes and hot soapy water, let them soak about 15 minutes and everything should wash right off. If you jump in and just start scrubbing it takes forever because your using more elbow grease!

As soon as you have finished using a plate, cup, mug etc rinse it off in cold water %26amp; leave to stand until you are ready to wash up.

This way they wash quicker %26amp; easier.

    Best wishes. UK
putting soap water and dishes in the sink and wash them it should only take you about 15 minutes to wash them but then it all depends how much dirty dishes you have but its the fastest way
    Use a soap filled brush.

Why is it a good idea to wear rubber gloves when washing dishes using detergents?

I just like wearing rubber gloves for any kind of household chores. Some of the reasons might be to keep your manicure, keep your hands from getting pruned or irritated, and they just feel nice when doing the dishes.

    I wear gloves for everything.

    Washing dishes?

i wash dishes with my hands b/c i dont have a dishwasher and i dont use dishwashing gloves. Will not using them make my hand years from not dry and older looking? So should i use gloves or no?Washing dishes?
I've washed dishes for years and years and don't wear gloves. I always drop the glasses when I do.

Use an effective, but mild, dish soap and a good hand lotion.Washing dishes?
Yes, if you wash dishes daily and use any detergent it will be very drying for your hands. Knowing this, I don't use gloves, but wish I had.
    naaa..use disposable dishes .
I grew up washing dishes by hand and didn't use scalding water so there really wasn't a problem but if you want to use gloves, why not? It's better in the long run I'm sure. I have had a diswasher for the last 25 or 3o yrs and can't even imagine why I would want to hand wash dishes unless they are delicate and frankly most of the newer dishwashers handles the delicates as well these days so I don't have to give that consideration.
Seventh Generation makes a great dish washing liquid that is not petroleum based. I've washed dishes for over 40 years and my hands look good, even though I used bargain brands for years.
i wash dishes daily. i use no gloves and my hands are fairly soft. The dishwashing soap plays a major role in it. i use dove the blue color. I love that dishwashing soap. Also AJAX the orange color works great and is inexpensive as well..

    Washing Dishes?

Do any of you boil a huge pot of water and then dump this into a sink with soap in it and then wash dirty dishes?

Mind you I let it cool a little so as not to boil my hands.

I have found out by doing this, that the filthy dishes get cleaner fast without scouring or using Comet or additional cleaners.Washing Dishes?
I have never tried it but definitely will!! I can't believe I never thought of that, this would greatly get rid of germs and bacteria as well! Thanks for the hint!! :)Washing Dishes?
I just run really hot water into my sink and let the dishes soak for a min. and it works just as good. You could rinse your dishes after using them and that would make it quicker for you to wash them. They wouldn't have to soak then.
you are making life to hard,, i would get a dishwasher
You can actually buy dishwashers that hermetically clean/sterilize, because the temperature of the water is so hot, and the door of the dishwasher is sealed so tight.......but maybe you just have to scrape, then wash, like most of us do without having access to commercial dishwashers.
    : ]
I would only do this if I didn't have hot water on the tap !
    hrm, good idea =)

    Washing Dishes-?

Does washing your dishes with hot running water and antibacterial soap, then rinsing really get them clean and safe to eat on again?Washing Dishes-?
Yes,l Think so......... Unless you are Really Alergic to everyday Germs.Washing Dishes-?
Hahaha, you are So Funny.lol. LMHO. Thankyou. Report Abuse

Absolutely! That's the way we do it...

Don't forget, dishwashers haven't been around forever! People have been washing dishes by hand ever since people have using dishes...long time, eh?!?! Of course, that might have meant washing them in a river and using sand to scrub them, but still! We're lucky that we have all the antibacterial soaps and stuff...lol!!!

If you are really worried, though, add a couple drops of bleach to your wash water...be sure to rinse thoroughly. Your dishes will be perfectly safe to use.
    Of course it is safe!!

If you are so worried about bacteria, use an abrasive sponge , so you will feel that you actually scrubbed the bacteria away.
Sure it does. I've done that for years and have never gotten sick from eating from my dishes.

  • Washing dishes?

Why do Brits not rinse the dishes after washing them!?Washing dishes?
Because Fairy Liqiud is so mild that it makes your hands as soft as your face so it can't be bad for you if you ingest it.

Actually I don't know why, but I think it's kind of yucky. Have you ever looked at the colour of the tea mugs at some folk's houses??!!

No, It's not an environmentally minded thing and it's not a racist generalization. It's certainly true of the older generation. I think it's something to do with the cost of water and the blitz and all that.Washing dishes?
i never wash the dishes, just lick them!
    i do rinse them
I always rinse the dishes after washing them, if you don't there is the risk of your food tasting like your washing up liquid, ugh; and rinsing stops the glasses from getting streaks. Mind you saying that my husband doesn't rinse any washing up, I just think that he wants me to complain so he has an excuse not to do it!
I rinse them but not after they are washed... I rinse them before laoding the dishwasher! No point in rinsing on the way out - they're dry!
Life is too short...get a dishwasher %26amp; worry about your own habits.
They are saving water and showing their on the backward side.
could be that some houses only have one sink.
    I DO
i do ,i dont understand why other people dont do it either , everything else you wash with soap.detergent etc you would rinse
they drive on the wrong side of the road too!!
i wash them then run undr the hot tap and im a brit
n i thought i was the only one doing that
I don't, the wife washes the dishes and things, and I assume that she rinses them. But I don't really know. A U.K. husband.
I always rinse mine!!!! And I'm British!!
I didnt realise that you HAD to rinse them. Surely its just a waste of water? Its not like they are covered in suds and will make you ill if you come in contact with them?
    I do!
i rinse my dishes im scottish if you dont the dishes usually leave soapy residue
Do you know every single British person then?? Have you been to all their houses and watched them do their dishes? I am British and I've seen plenty people wash their dishes, but do they rinse? How the feck would I know, I don't study them!!! How sad would that be???
im nt sure.............il ask my english m8...........
Those people who don't rinse dishes after washing them, and I suspect that it's not just limited to the British are probably environmentally minded. Rinsing the dishes involves using extra water and water is a dwindling commodity - you should praise rather than put them down for their actions.
because it is a waste of water? why rinse it, if it's already washed????
That is something I did not know. I have an English friend, I'll ask him.
coz when they are applying the dishwashing liquid the water is flowing
I have a sister-in-law who is from England. She has always rinsed her dishes. Whatever gave you the idea that they don't rinse their dishes?
coz we need the plates quick to eat our dinner. anyway, how do you know some brits might rinse afterward
I noticed that my sister in law doesn't rinse them. Not sure why. From what I have observed, the people in the U.K. are much less wasteful than most Americans and use biological detergents.
I didn't realise that this was a racial problem. I hate that ridiculous generalisation anyway since there's no such thing as a british way of life or attitude or opinion considering Britain is made up of 3 different nationalities and the U.K 4. (sorry, this question really isn't serious enough to have an argument about patriotism) But to answer the question, it's probably because washing dishes is crappy and anything that can be done to shorten the task is favourable.
why do that when you can just like them
perhaps the Brits you know! but i always do and so do all the folk i know
This is information I had no clue about. Maybe they don't use soap? Otherwise it seems like to me that everything they ate would taste like soap.

    Washing Dishes?

When your washing dishes at home and you dont have a dish washer, do you fill the sink with water or do you just wash them under running water? Also, is one better than the other as far as germs go.

For both assume you are using hot water. And you are using soap and a spunge.

Ive always just done it under running water but my fiancee gets angry when i do it that way, she says that they dont get

as clean as soaking them. Now my family has always done it that way and we never sick no where near how much my girls family gets sick doing it by soaking. Im not saying thats why people fet sick, but... well you get it.....Washing Dishes?
My husband does under hot running water, I fill the sink, if not using the dishwasher. Filling the sink with hot, soapy water then another sink with hot water and a little clorox to rinse as a good sterilize.

My personal feeling on running water and washing is that it is a huge waste of water. Especially since water shortages are going on, one hasn't gotten sick yet, that we know of from the running water routine i have to admit.. and, if i am majorly rushed, i might do that way too..

Rather than sink sponge washing , You might want to consider, a soap dispensing unit like a '; DishMaster'; unit , you can get at I think Home depot . I absolutely LOVED it, when had mine..

Sponges harbor bacteria. I would use instead Handiwipes.. for counters instead, or if using sponges make sure to throw out if smell.. there's bacteria in there... i change mine every week.

The DishMaster unit is great, you put soap in the unit, turn on the hot water and press a button and it releases through a wand with a brush attachment at the end the soap , water ,and all spray from, then scrub to clean..release button, then rinse with hot water .... this is the next best wonder for the kitchen i feel if you don't have a dish washer!..Washing Dishes?
I fill the sink and soak them and wash with sponge/soap and rinse with hot water. (we almost never get sick)
Well I am 55 and have always run a sink full with hot soapy water washed the dishes and rinsed under hot running water when I worked for different restaurants we had to go to health school and we were always told that you must always rinse in hot running water for at least 10 seconds to sanitize the dishes hope this helps
We fill the sink with water, scrub and rinse with hot water. You are wasting an enormous amount of water letting the faucet run which is not a good thing in my part of the country.
I wash them both ways depending on how many dishes I have dirty. When I just wash them under running water, I make sure to put water on them until I get ready to wash them. Either way they are getting the same amount of clean. My water is hot enough that my hands turn beet red when I do either type of washing. We have never gotten sick from either way.
I dont fill my sink with water first...

I wash my dishes under running water

My favorite dish soap is Dawn it goes great job at getting out grease.

    --------------------------------------鈥?br>

    Here my favorite trick......

If your pot is full of grease

1- Rinse it out with hot water dry scrub with out soap

2- Fill pot with hot water and dish soap it sit until your done with your last of your dishes

3 - Scrub way the germs
My family is just 2 people. So when we have just a few dishes we run them under hot water and use a sponge with soap. If I wash dishes for more people, I fill the sink with hot soapy water and wash them that way. I usually wash the larger pans before we eat, just after I empty them. That way there are fewer dishes to wash after dinner.. And I have never had or never want to have a dish washer. A waste of time. You have to wash them twice with a dish washer.
After enjoying the delicious meal you have just prepared, fill sink and drop all those dirty little f-ers in and... ';set it and forget it';. Take the dog out, drop the kids off at the pool, kiss the miss, and call the cops on your loud neighbor. By the time you're done, the dishes will be clean enough for a wipe and a rinse. (sometimes your gotta give the ol' spit and elbow grease on the real nasties)
Depends.. I have a 2 compartment sink, so I use the one side to soak my dishes and wash them, and the other to rinse and dry.....

As long as you use Hot water, and now I would use dawn with bleach, your good to go...
i have a double sink..i wash in one side the dip it in the other side that has no soap to rinse....and we have never gotten sick from it

    Washing dishes?

Dear friends, we always wash our dishes without wearing gloves and have always wondered whether it will be safe and healthy to our hands and skin if we will continue to do so. What do you think? Is there any dish detergent in the stores that is safe and healthy to use without wearing gloves? And are there any gloves that are specific to washing dishes with? Thank you very much beforehand, sincerely, RojinWashing dishes?
I use Palmolive and haven't had any problems other than my hands chapping some during the winter. I hate rubber gloves but Vaseline has a hand lotion out that will coat your hands and waterproof them for a while.Washing dishes?
    there are lots of dish soaps advertising ';dry skin therapy'; and ';for sensitive skin';

I think they are all safe to use. I think all gloves are safe to use with dishes.
We washed dishes with our naked hands for years and years, using Ivory %26amp; Palmolive. Now, however, my fingernails have become soft and I don't want to soak them. So I went to Sam's over by the pharmacy and got laytex gloves like a person would use to give someone a shot or take some blood. I love the way that my hands still feel so clean even if I just scrubbed a greasy pan.
its perfectly safe but i always use gloves, you can get gloves in your supermarket, they are usually come in yellow and marigold is the main manufacturer!

    good luck!
It's safe to wash dishes w/ bare hands but it's hard on your skin. I think it depends on if you wash them w/ hot or cold water. Hot water is harsh dries out your skin.

I always heard that you should wash dishes in hot water to eliminate bacteria plus it helps to dry faster.

    Washing dishes?

Is it better to do the dishes once a day or to keep them done up doing them several times a day?Washing dishes?
I think it's better to keep up on them as they get dirty. That way the food doesn't get stuck on so they wash up more quickly. Also it never seems like a lot of dishes if you keep up on them. Just let them air dry that saves time.Washing dishes?
I do dishes several times a day. I dont like them piling up in case company stops in on a surprise. I have never had a dishwasher.

A couple years ago, I had to call an ambulance to my friends house. At the time, his lazy 25 yr old daughter who couldnt even clean out the lint trap on the dryer realized she had an ambulance crew coming and she immediately started doing a weeks worth of dishes. There she stand in the kitchen trying to make a good impression - too late....

The ambulance crew had to tell her to get out of the way.

I know all the ambulance crew got the impression the family just all live in squalor which was true until she moved out on her own.

A pile of dirty dishes equal sloppy housework and give the impression of laziness unless you just have a couple glasses or something.

I think you should keep the dishes up several times a day.
Doing the dishes once a day saves money (used on hot water and dish-washing detergent), as well as time and energy.

You might enjoy these benefits, as long as there aren't too many dirty dishes to cope with at once, and the kitchen doesn't become unsanitary.

Scrape them well; stack them neatly in the sink, and leave room for your hand to reach the sink strainer. At the end of the day, fill with hot water and a couple of squirts of detergent. Then just reach in and wash whatever comes first. It's a breeze. If company comes, cover the pile of dishes in the sink with a pretty dish-towel.
Thankfully, I have a dishwasher. But before I did, I found it was easier keeping up with them throughout the day instead of letting them all pile up...
I try to wash as I go, even though I have a dishwasher. lol...some meals are small so why not wash by hand?

    Washing dishes?

This is only a random question. What is the best way to wash dishes without use of the dishwasher?Washing dishes?
Depends on if you have a double sink or single. If it's a double, fill up one side with hot soapy water. Put all the dirty dishes in there, and let them soak overnight. In the morning have breakfast and put more dirty dishes in the sink. Go to work or school. When you come home have a snack and put more dirty dishes in the sink. Then after dinner put more dirty dishes in the sink. When you have no more clean dishes, buy new ones and get rid of the ones that have been soaking. Life is so simple when you know the answers.Washing dishes?
    um, hands, soap, and washcloth~!
Hot water and plenty of soap...rinse with sprayer or faucet and not in standing water. Air dry in rack and arrange dishes to be stacked so no standing water will stay on dish.
soak dishes in hot soapy water, then scrub with a sponge and dishwashing liquid, then rinse and dry...
I like to soak mine first in very hot suzzy water.( made with extremely hot water and dish soap) When the water cools down then you can wash them using a dish cloth and rinse them too. I like to air dry them in a rack to.
get someone else to wash them. incidentally, doesn't midori mean green in japanese? i could be wrong, but i'm pretty sure...
    same as above
hire someone else to wash them!!! My neighbor does that...she is just lazy
Well i wash the Mediterranean way.

first squeeze a small amount of washing up liquid in a little bowl and add some water. Now you are ready to wash.

Take your item to wash and use a sponge and wipe the item.

Leave to the side and repeat with something else.

Do this with everything and then rinse each individual item separately using a small flow of water. Then leave to drain.

Now everything is clean and not too much water was used.

If people change their way of washing dishes we would have no water shortage problems in the future.
use a scuor pad dish soap and hot water
    nope...
that's easy go out buy some dish soap and use a towal and your hands run water make shore it is bubblely then but dishes in it then scurb until it's clean that's all.
you get dish soap and use a sponge that you pour dishsoap down to the handle it is easy and it works easely
warm to hot soapy water. I always wash glasses and cups first, then plates and saucers, then utensils, then the heavy stuff....pots and pans. it works for me.
in my opinion, find one of those long sponge things that has a handle you fill with dish washing detergent so your hands don't get as wet and messy. Gloves are also helpful. If you have a pan with a lot of stuff suck on it, fill it with water and a fabric softerner sheet and let it sit for a while and all the stuck on stuff will become unstuck.
Fill a huge bowl with water. Put soap on the dishes. Put all the dishes in the bowl and let it sit. Then you wipe the dishes with a cloth and you're done.

I wash my dishes by hand, should i use cold or lukewarm water?Washing dishes?
As long as you use soap and sterilize with hot water in the rinse... use whatever you like. Soap and high temperature kills germs.

It's better on your HANDS to use warm water. I use water as warm as I can stand - because it helps my arthritis.

    Peace hon!Washing dishes?
    You're welcome, hon Report Abuse

use really hot water. Wear gloves that protect your hand because that hot water and soup can really damage your hands
I would use lukewarm unless you dont mind having cold hands besides warm water gets them clean faster
Use water as hot as your hands can stand. You might want to wash wearing rubber gloves so you could tolerate hotter water. Cold water will not remove the grease from dishes.
Use very warm water to wash and hot water to rinse. A couple of drops of bleach in the water is a good thing to prevent germs.
You should wash dishes with the hottest water your hands can take and rinse with straight hot water.

Why isnt my dishwasher washing dishes?

the water is going in, its emptying the detergent in, and then sitting there doing nothing before it empties again having done nothing. its not pushing the water around to actually wash them? is there anything i could check before i call someone to come and take a look? its a built in unit. Why isnt my dishwasher washing dishes?
the problem sounds to be that the timer is missing the wash cycle. it is also possible that the wash motor has a problem. the pump and wash motor are normally seperate. Why isnt my dishwasher washing dishes?
Since the water empties out, it's not a clogged drain. This sounds like a problem with the timer/controller. My Bosch dishwasher had a similar problem and that's what it was.
clean the filter or call the maintenance if they cost you a lot buy a new one. All equipments in the market now functioning for max. 2 years then problem starts. They all made in China.
yes definitely clean the whole of the filter and also use a dishwasher cleaner every couple weeks, the cheapest i've found are tesco's own brand at just over 2 quid for a twin pack
How often do you clean out the filter? Try this first, you will be surprised how quickly they get clogged up.
Mine is sitting down having a cup of coffee
    she has gone on strike
    try cleaning the filter

Is hand-washing dishes and clothes a more eco-friendly approach?

Of course it would be for energy, but does it use less water? Is hand-washing dishes and clothes a more eco-friendly approach?
Nope. Statistics say dishwashers are more water efficient if you only scrape the dishes, not rinse or prewash them and only wash when completely full. (I don't have a DW so can't say how it works out)

As for hand washing......for delicates, I'd still hand wash since they last longer which is super eco-friendly to having to buy new items more often. I can't see handwashing larger items but rather only wash full loads and then hang to dry.

    Restuarants and washing dishes?

I know everybody saw a movie or made a joke about the infamous washing dishes fiasco, but is it true? Has anybody ever really had to this? Maybe in the past?Restuarants and washing dishes?
actually years ago in a lot of rural communities there would be little diners that would let certain people in the community, that the owners knew could not afford to pay do dishes in return for food. i grew up in such a community. it was a way for the owners to let the people retain some dignity and still be able to get a meal, when they could not afford to. most people back then did not like to take a free hand out and would not eat if they could not work for their food.Restuarants and washing dishes?
    absolutely untrue
    i don't think so...
They usually just call the police.
Great question, I think it's an urban legend.

My brother has worked in ten restaurants so far and if you can't pay they will call the cops.
Some weird place may let you do it, but for the most part they call the cops.
Actually, rumours say that this is a rumour..

But i think, i saw someone actually do this. It may be rumour, may not. Only God Knows..
I knew someone who worked off his bar tab like this once.
I teases people about this before but never actually made them but then again I have never had anyone stiff me for a meal.

Why do my legs become itchy when I'm washing dishes?

I've tried different kinds of soap and sometimes it just happens when I'm just rinsing vegetables with water but when I'm using any sink my legs become itchy. I don't break out in blisters or anything and I'm not allergic to anything I know of but this has gone on for years. Sometimes progresses to my arms but usually affecting everywhere below the knee. Why do my legs become itchy when I'm washing dishes?
Because your hands are wet and you can't scratch them easily...Why do my legs become itchy when I'm washing dishes?
You may be allergic to a compound in the material that the sink is made out of, or perhaps something that was used to clean the sink.

What saves more money, washing dishes in the dishwasher or in the sink?

The dish washer uses less water as long as you run it only on a full load.It cost more in electricity to use the dishwasher. But it takes your time to hand wash the dishes too. How valuable is your time? What saves more money, washing dishes in the dishwasher or in the sink?
Dish washer uses less water for a great deal more dishes. You use electricity but on average, it's cheaper to use dish washer. Get one that empties and rinses between each cycle and has a thermostat that will heat water that isn't hot enough to clean. Mine actually has a high temp wash I use when someone is sick, hot water kills more germs! What saves more money, washing dishes in the dishwasher or in the sink?
Now, thanks to a scientific study at the University of Bonn in Germany, you can have your cake and eat it too-relaxed in the knowledge that the cleaning up with your trusted machine will be a piece of cake and the eco-friendly thing to do...

The Bonn study proves that the dishwasher uses only half the energy and one-sixth of the water, less soap too. Even the most sparing and careful washers could not beat the modern dishwasher. The study also rated the cleanliness achieved, again in favor of the washing machine (sorry grandma). There have been studies before, but this is one of the few that stands (wo)man against machine and it sets itself apart by including a thorough analysis of the effect of half-loads and the whole demand range from your cake plate to the grimiest pots.
Your dishwasher uses less water to do more.
I would like to think the dishwasher would save more money in the long run.. Especially if you only run full loads, Do NOT use the dry feature AND run it on time delay at night while you are sleeping and the hot water is heated for no reason in particular...
Dishwasher, uses alot less than you would for doing dishes!!!! thats why they have to meet engery star requirments.
Dishwasher......Your average dish takes about 30 seconds to thoroughly wash.....and that's all running water. A dishwasher is much more economic.

  • What uses more water...washing dishes by hand or putting them in a dishwasher?

i have read that a dishwasher uses 40% less water than by hand but not sure i believe itWhat uses more water...washing dishes by hand or putting them in a dishwasher?
You obviously never had to pay a water bill. What uses more water...washing dishes by hand or putting them in a dishwasher?
If you have 2 big sinks fill one with hot soapy water and the other with at least a gallon of warm water with 1 capful of bleach (No more than 1 cap) and rinse them that way. This will save you water than rinsing them under running water, and adding bleach to the water will kill germs.
It depends on how you hand-wash them, your method of machine washing, and what type of dishwasher you have.

If you scrape your dishes before washing them (we tend to scrape ours into the dog's bowl, throwing away stuff that could hurt her), fill up a pan or sink for the wash water and another for the rinse water, you will use less water than a washing machine. However, if you let the water run, you will use more.

On the other hand, if you are the type of person who washes off the dishes with running water before putting in the dishwasher, you will definately use a LOT more water.

I started hand washing (using the method I described above), and my water bill dropped by $30 a month (for a family of five).
Dishwasher. All you have to do is cut the water off until you rinse if you wash them in the sink.
The dish water definately. the dishwasher.
washing dishes by hand and not by putting them in the dishwasher( well only if you have the state of the art, water saving dishwasher)

My dishwasher suddenly quit washing dishes?

My dishwasher recently quit cleaning dishes, all it does is move food around to other dishes, it seems to be hot, but not clean, any thoughts.

thanks in advanceMy dishwasher suddenly quit washing dishes?
Maybe I can give you a real answer to your question. A dishwasher that suddenly stops removing debris from the dishes most likely is not either filling properly with enough water or it is not circulating the water that is in the unit to actually work on the dishes. What I would do before anything is buy a large jar of Tang ((the orange crystals) and then fill the dishwasher (no dishes). Once filled open the door and pour the Tang into the unit and run it through a normal cycle. The Tang will clean out the dishwasher (I'm not kidding). If that doesn't improve things then you are better off just calling a service technician because it could be a number of things depending on the brand, age, etc.My dishwasher suddenly quit washing dishes?
Either it's not enough water pressure getting to the dishes or the drain pipe is clogged.
well then its not a dishwasher anymore

lol - ok but enough with the jokes - it probably does not have enough water pressure so you might have a pressure problem or the ';fan'; or whatever you call it at the bottom might be broken and not spinning.
OMG NO NOT THAT ,, geez your gonna have to do them by hand!! wow isnt that terrible,, basically if u dont know anything about a dishwasher call a repair man geez,, someone who knows what they are doing will be really helpful ! LOL mean time u may want to get some gloves heeheee happy dish washing !!!
heres an idea....try doing it manually. im sure it wont hurt.
Well . . . sounds like you need a new dishwasher.
I suggest you get a sponge and some dish soap until you can get it fixed. Good luck!!
Hmmm ur dishwasher is hot and not clean. First off I dont care how hot she is if shes dirty throw her in the shower and then trade her in for one that will do the dishes
