What uses more water...washing dishes by hand or putting them in a dishwasher?

If you have 2 big sinks fill one with hot soapy water and the other with at least a gallon of warm water with 1 capful of bleach (No more than 1 cap) and rinse them that way. This will save you water than rinsing them under running water, and adding bleach to the water will kill germs.
It depends on how you hand-wash them, your method of machine washing, and what type of dishwasher you have.





If you scrape your dishes before washing them (we tend to scrape ours into the dog's bowl, throwing away stuff that could hurt her), fill up a pan or sink for the wash water and another for the rinse water, you will use less water than a washing machine. However, if you let the water run, you will use more.





On the other hand, if you are the type of person who washes off the dishes with running water before putting in the dishwasher, you will definately use a LOT more water.





I started hand washing (using the method I described above), and my water bill dropped by $30 a month (for a family of five).
