I started a new job washing dishes. After a couple days my fingers hurt like hell. What can I do to help the?

My finger joints where my fingers bend hurt the joint between my finger tips and knuckles.I started a new job washing dishes. After a couple days my fingers hurt like hell. What can I do to help the?
That's because you're working your hands harder than you normally do, you can also develop carpal tunnel by doing this as well. My suggestion is to soak your hands in hot/lukewarm water each day and try to refrain from typing so much or doing anything too much with your fingers after work. If they are bothering you terribly you should probably make a doctor's appointment, and get a new job.I started a new job washing dishes. After a couple days my fingers hurt like hell. this is normal if you have too much dishto clean up

What are some benfits of washing dishes by hand instead of using the dishwasher?

you know if there realy clean. What are some benfits of washing dishes by hand instead of using the dishwasher?
Your hands get clean as well. What are some benfits of washing dishes by hand instead of using the dishwasher?
no chances of melting or braking dishes.
There are none the dishwasher has the water hot enough to sterilize the dishes.
Anymore, none. You actually use less water using a dishwasher.
I read somewhere, not so long ago, that studies show that people who wash dishes by hand rather than by machine live longer. Apparently it's because it requires a time of idle activity which gives you a chance to unwind, chat, etc., as opposed to being freed up to rush to the next activity.
I wash dishes by hand to clean them, then i put them in the dishwasher to get the HOT water for sterilization. It might be overboard, but I feel better about it.

  • What would you think if you are washing dishes & a glass kind of explodes out of the blue?

and you didn't even touch it, %26amp; it wasn't an accident, it popped, it scared me, I didn't know where the big noise was coming from, what could've caused it, seriously? What would you think if you are washing dishes %26amp; a glass kind of explodes out of the blue?
    Me, I'd think, ';Damn, another broken glass!';

If you're looking for an explanation, it wasn't anything paranormal, if that's what you were thinking. Odds are almost certain it was one of two things. Either there was a temperature gradient that caused it to shatter, or it might have slid and bumped into something else in just the right way.

Unless the glass had nostalgic value for you, I wouldn't worry too much about it.What would you think if you are washing dishes %26amp; a glass kind of explodes out of the blue?
I'd think my mutant superpowers are just begining to realize themselves.

I would think it is time to buy a dishwasher.
    I think ';Oh, crap! That was scary!';

Seriously, it comes from stress and dislocations in glass. Even if your glass wasn't sitting on the hot stove at the moment, there were times in its life when it was exposed to hight temperatures, possibly was knocked over before but didn't shatter back then. When glass is made, it cools off unevenly - so there are always internal stresses in glass. Tiny cracks that are not visible to the eye are introduced over glass's life time. Those cracks can start expaning spontaneously from a minor temperature change in the room.
One thing I'd think was who fired that shot or am I hurt? I'd agree with everyone else some kind of stress or temperature change.
I would think that it had a crack, a weakness or a flaw that gave in with the expansion or contraction caused by temperature change - like hot dish water
    I would be thinking:

    Product liability lawsuit!!!

There is a famous case when coke bottle exploded.
One of two things can cause it. A rapid temperature change or sonics.
If you just washed it in hot water or it had hot liquid in it, the change in temperature (even if its empty and just cooling off) can cause it to crack without even touching it.

Which cost more? using your dishwasher or washing dishes in the sink?

which cost more? using your dishwasher or washing dishes in the sink?

And this is on a daily basisWhich cost more? using your dishwasher or washing dishes in the sink?
Hand washing your dishes in the sink is much cheaper and echo friendly.Which cost more? using your dishwasher or washing dishes in the sink?
the dishwasher. more electric usage and you have to buy the specia tablets which are expensive, then you have to load the crockery a special way. no thanks!

I do it by hand in the bowl, just a quick squirt of fairy washing up liquid, hot water and Bobs your Uncle
Using the dishwasher costs more than washing dishes by hand. Plus using soaking your hands in the soapy water will make them soft.
    washing dishes in the dishwasher
dishwasher cost more cause electricitiy usage and dishwashing liquid.

handwashing doesn't involve electricity, just dish soap.
Its all relative. what I would do is look at your dishwashers specs and find out how much water is consumed per cycle wash. Then I would let your sink fill up as you hand wash a normal load of dishes. When done you could use an empty gallon of water jug and measure the water that way. Once you figure out how much water was used by cleaning manually you can compare to that of the machine. Hope this helps. Ps if you have kids this would be a cool research project for them!!

    Jim
I've a dish washer and i only use it when it is full up and then it is switched on i only use it every other day ,so if i was washing the dishes by hand I'd need to wash all the breakfast ,dinner, tea and supper dishes cutlery and glasses and cups all at different times and this would waste time, as the dish washer does this for me they do have different programmes so you decide how long it washes for. Also i have a family of 4 and i hate having to do all that washing up.So it may cost more but for me it's more practical to use a dish washer.
Dishwashers cost more to run due to the amount of power used, but coming from someone who doesn't have one, I WOULD RECOMMEND A DISHWASHER. Washing your own dishes is inexpensive, yes, but I hate standing there washing dishes for an hour every time I cook. So, in conclusion, dishwashers may be a bit more pricey, but they don't require time, or your energy.

Will using hand soap work for washing dishes in a dishwasher?

will using hand soap work for washing dishes in a dishwasher? Will using hand soap work for washing dishes in a dishwasher?
You have the answer, too much suds. Also not strong enough. Dishwasher detergent is a much stronger alkali than hand soap. Also contains bleach. ( look at the label )

As for the cola ( or other soft drink ) it is the phosphoric acid, not the carbonation that does the cleaning. Will using hand soap work for washing dishes in a dishwasher?
Don't ever use hand soap / dish detergent in a dishwasher! Trust me I tried it. I figured that 1 ml wouldn't hurt anything. Needless to say the husband was quite pleased when he came home to find that I had scrubbed the entire kitchen clean. He didn't need to know that I had to scrub the kitchen in order to get the 12 inches of soap suds up off the floor.

Save yourself a headache and do them by hand. If you have stubborn caked on food, let them sit in a hot sink with sudsy water for about an hour. Everything should come off easily.

HINT: for pots that have stuck on food, pour some cola into the pot and let sit overnight. The carbonation in the cola works the food out. Then all you need to do is wash as normal.
No. Hands soap will probably produce too much suds and cause the dish washer to leak. Besides, you may be able to taste the residue left on the dishes. Many hand soaps contain some sort of skin softener. Such as lanolin. And they don't taste good.
No. Hand dish soap is made to foam a lot. Dishwasher fluid does not do this. You dishwasher will overflow with bubbles and make a mess, and it might break your dishwasher.
No. It'll make a big mess. Dishwasher soaps are suds free. Better off washing the dishes in the sink if all you have is hand or dish soap.

Does a dishwasher appliance save energy compared to washing dishes in the sink?

Well, depends on how often you plan on using the dishwasher. If your dishwasher is full, it's said to be cheaper than washing the total by hand due to letting water run when rinsing off the soap. I slightly prerinse something that would harden as I only run the dishwasher every 2-3 days since my youngest moved out. I also make sure dishes are removed when finished, I don't use the dry cycle either, just air dry cycle. I have an Asko dishwasher that uses 2/3 less water than other dishwashers, I also have the Asko laundry machine that uses much less water even though it has 5 rinse cycles and it uses 2 tablespoons of soap maximum. The newer American brands are a lot better than they used to be and probably cheaper to purchase than when we bought ours as the American companies weren't thinking ecologically as much as they are now. I don't remember the stats on the dishwasher but the clothes washer consumes $23 a year with an electric hot water heater and $12 a year with a gas hot water heater. Before purchasing any appliance, check the energy guide.Does a dishwasher appliance save energy compared to washing dishes in the sink?
considering the fact that you are using electricity and hot water for about an hour, i'd say no.Does a dishwasher appliance save energy compared to washing dishes in the sink?
dishwashers use electricity, hand washing does not use electricity (if cold water)

but what is your time worth?
No energy is saved by using an appliance. You use electricity and gas to heat your water to the very high temperatures it needs. You still have to load and unload. Washing dishes by hand is by far cheaper and saves on all accounts. That being said....I would stick to the dishwasher unless you really need to budget.
a dish washer uses far less water than hand washing. if u turn off the heating elements(energy saver mode) a dish washer would cost less to wash the dishes

What is the best way NOT to lose a manicure while washing dishes or hair?

I have french tips...What is the best way NOT to lose a manicure while washing dishes or hair?
Well if you don't wanna wear gloves. try putting a top coat and sealing it.. like brush across the tip of your nail.

The other way is: wearing gloves. Get those medical gloves. They are great. What is the best way NOT to lose a manicure while washing dishes or hair?
I would wear latex gloves while doing dishes. Mr Clean has some really good but cheap ones.
Use rubber gloves for both jobs.
Having someone else do them for you!

Why do I sneeze and build up mucus when Im washing dishes?

Its really annoying and it consistently happens, its very aggravating...Why do I sneeze and build up mucus when Im washing dishes?
It could be because your head is tilted forward which causes your nose to run. You also could be allergic to the soap that you're using. Do you know if you have any allegies? Why do I sneeze and build up mucus when Im washing dishes?
You might be allergic to that type of dishwashing liquid
Hmm.. You might be allergic to the dish soap you are using. Try getting a new dish soap. If you still sneeze and have build up mucus, try asking a doctor.

This happens to me when I lay down. It may just be random!

  • Which is more beneficial, washing dishes by hand or dishwasher?

My roommate and I disagree about whether to hand wash our dishes or put them in the dishwasher. I feel it's the dishwasher because the heat of it will kill germs. He says hand washing because you actually scrub every inch of the surface. Is there an answer or is it always a matter of personal opinion?Which is more beneficial, washing dishes by hand or dishwasher?
It is actually ';greener'; to wash the dishes in the dishwasher,

if you have a full load, and don't waste water by pre-rinsing.Which is more beneficial, washing dishes by hand or dishwasher?
I simply LOVE my dishwasher, if I washed dishes by hand that's all I'd be doing all-day! I only run my dishwasher when it's completely full and at night on time delay that way it's running at 4-5am when no one is using electric or hot water. It saves on the electric bill. It also uses LESS soap/water than handwashing and gets the water ABOVE 120 degrees so it sanitizes as it cleans which when handwashing the water isn't nearly as HOT! I don't have much of a problem with stuck-on food since I scrap my plates and sometimes will rinse the dish briefly. I use ELECTRSOL TABS that I get on sale so for 90 tabs about 3 months of detergent I usually get for under $10! Also, I don't overload the dishwasher and I got a few bottles of CASCADE rinse/cleaning agent which worked quite well. I wouldn't go without a dishwasher again!

It also depends on how many dishes you/roommate go through in a given day. If it's only acouple then it's probably a good idea to wash them when you are done using them. I have a family of 4 and cook 3-4 nights a week. So, we always have dishes. Another tip is to have a 1 cup rule: Which states that when you get a cup out of the cabinet you only use that cup the whole day... It saves on multiple dirty cups in the wash! Sounds silly but, you'd be surprised at how many cups 1 person uses in a day!

    Good luck
If you only have a few dishes, then washing it by hand is the better option. If you have lots or have enough plates and cutlery where you can wait for a full load for a dishwasher, then dishwasher. Dishwashers may not scrub the dishes, but the detergent you use combined with hot water will get them clean. Plus, using a dish washer for large loads is more water efficient.
A dishwasher gets hot enough to sanitize the dishes. Even if they (occasionally) come out with some crud on them, the crud will be sanitized.

    Appetizing, huh?

I mostly rely on the dishwasher, but I've found that some stuff just will NOT come off ... anything with dried-on eggs or cheese, or oatmeal ... or something that's been burned in a pan ... so I end up handwashing those.

There's no right or wrong answer. Handwashing in HOT water with a good dish detergent and a complete rinsing is effective. A dishwasher is actually more eco-friendly provided it is FULL to capacity. It's mostly a matter of choice.
I prefer the dishwasher plus I usually scrape my plates etc fairly clean so I don't have a problem with them not getting clean. Now since my dishwasher isn't working, I definitely appreciate it more %26amp; the water is hotter in it than what I can take rinsing them myself.
My time is important and valuable. I don't have the time to lovingly wash, scrub and dry every inch of every dish by hand, that's an hour and a bit out of my day that could have been better spent doing something less mind numbing. Dishwasher all the way.
washing dishes with your hands with out gloves gets your skin bad in time, with gloves are ok, dishwasher never washes perfectly.

When hand washing dishes, which do you hate to wash the most?

glasses, dishes, silverware or pots and pans? When hand washing dishes, which do you hate to wash the most?
Beer glasses. My fiance bought a bunch of really nice beer glasses but they get really skinny near the bottom and I can't get my hand in them very well. Sometimes they get stuff in the bottom corners that need a good scrubbing but it's impossible to reach! When hand washing dishes, which do you hate to wash the most?
glasses, I shaved off part of my thumb years ago when the glass I was washing broke....bled forever, took ages to heal. Like a paper cut 10 times over. I don't mind difficult, bleeding out from an open wound, not so much.
pans...and knives. I'm always afraid I'm going to cut myself.
    Silverware...definitely
pots and pans... the food always seems to get stuck on it even if you use a non-stick pan and grease them. :(
    Silverware for sure..
    Flatware.
    silverware
pots and pans... they always make the water so nasty

What uses less energy & water, Hand washing dishes or a dishwasher machine?

the electricity board told me that dishwashers are one of the worst offenders when it comes to wasted energy along with, tumble dryers and outdoor water features. i guess it must be the same with water consumption. having said that our boiler uses about 2 bowls of water before the water turns hot enough to wash dishes so it really depends how efficent your appliances are. What uses less energy %26amp; water, Hand washing dishes or a dishwasher machine?
obviously washing them by hand. What uses less energy %26amp; water, Hand washing dishes or a dishwasher machine?
Hand washing because you are only using water and not electricity like your dishwasher.
Depends on how you wash dishes. If you fill the sink with water and wash, hand washing will use less. If on the other hand you use running water, it's likely hand washing will use more.

Run the washer with a full load, and don't use the heated dry; just crack the door open when it's done and the dishes will be dry in 30 minutes or so (often less than it takes the heated dry to do it).
hand washing............I wish it was the dishwasher
Contrary to popular belief, a dishwasher uses a lot less of everything, per load.
A dishwasher uses lots less water, and if you skip the drying cycle and put them on the drainer, then it will also save on energy
    easy hand washing

On average, which conserves more water, running a midrange priced dishwasher against washing dishes by hand?

We wash by hand.I've never seen a dishwasher that can scrub a pot clean. Electrics are a waste of energy and water. We use ours to store crackers. On average, which conserves more water, running a midrange priced dishwasher against washing dishes by hand?
Most studies I've read say they use the same or the dishwasher uses a little less.

Dishwashers usually use hotter water so your dishes are cleaner.

Generally, which method of washing dishes is more efficient?

    1.Running the dishwasher

    or

    2. Washing each dish by hand

Which method uses less water and energy, and overall cut costs?Generally, which method of washing dishes is more efficient?
Washing by hand. Because you can control as to how much water you need to do your dishes and liquid dish soap is a lot cheaper then detergent for the dishwasher. Washing by hand you also get your dishes a lot cleaner where as a dishwasher you may have to wash them twice just to get them clean. Depending as to how hard it is to get the food off. Washing each dish by hand is definitely more efficient.Generally, which method of washing dishes is more efficient?
It depends on how many people are in the home. Running a half full dishwasher is not an affective use of water and electricity. If you have to collect several days worth of dishes to fill it up it will be necessary to pre wash by hand so that debris doesn't harden on and you're washing twice. Most dishwashers have a setting to eliminate heat during drying, it saves on electricity but leaves spots.

The most important thing is to not leave water running when you wash by hand. I don't use a dishpan but I do fill a small bowl with soapy water and use that to dip the sponge into as I wash each dish, stacking the soapy dishes to the side. After washing all of them I turn the water on to quickly rinse. I think this is probably the best way to go. I add a few drops of bleach to the wash water so I get the same disinfecting effect as if the dishwasher was used.

The largest waste of resourcesr I've seen is someone running the water continually, squirting soap onto each dish as they go, washing and then rinsing each dish at a time. My mother will run the hot water full blast for 30 minutes to wash just a few dishes. I can't make her understand that if she does that, she might as well run the dishwasher with those few dishes in it, it's a terrible waste..
I would imagine that it depends on how many dishes you do a day.. I have a family of four so we run our FULL dishwasher at night on time delay every other night or so..... We use tabs rather than liquid or powde detergent and use air dry over heat dry.... I think it would cost us more to wash dishes by hand since we'd have to run the hot water and take the time to wash each dish by hand... We don't have trouble getting items cleaned or with spots.... Not to mention just the time it takes to wash the dishes in general... I HATE washing dishes by hand it sucks...! I LOVE knowing that while I'm sleeping the dishes are getting nice and clean!
Using the dishwasher, and not pre cleaning will save water and energy. Plus it will kill off more germs and bacteria.
By hand saves both water and energy, but not cost IF you include the time it takes as a cost factor.

Do you save more water by hand-washing dishes or using the dishwater?

According to the USGS Connecticut Water Science Center website on the average 9-12 gallons of water are used for an automatic dishwasher and 20 gallons is used to hand wash dishes. I found that surprising.

One way or another we should all be looking for ways to conserve water. Below are some tips to help you save water when washing dishes.

    1. If you wash dishes by hand--and that's the best way--don't leave the water running for rinsing. If you have two sinks, fill one with rinse water. If you only have one sink, use a spray device or short blasts instead of letting the water run. Saves 200 to 500 gallons a month.

    2. When washing dishes by hand, use the least amount of detergent possible. This minimizes rinse water needed. Saves 50 to 150 gallons a month.

    3. Never put water down the drain when there may be another use for it such as watering a plant or garden, or cleaning.

    4. Operate automatic dishwashers only when they are fully loaded.Do you save more water by hand-washing dishes or using the dishwater?
hand washing.you control the use of water.Do you save more water by hand-washing dishes or using the dishwater?
if you are a single person I'd think you'd save water by using paper plates and by hand washing. If you have a family you'd certainly need to wash dishes daily if not only to teach your child cleanliness and prevent bugs but then you'd also be paying for the electricity. Washing dishes with a dishwasher adds to your electric bill just as using your stove does (is better and cheaper to use a microwave). Some people ';rinse'; the dishes first before putting them in the dishwasher, seems to me that that kind of situation would be more wasteful.
The dish washer will save you water it reuses some of the water and uses verry little to clean a load.
Use the dishwasher if you want to save water. Use hand washing if you want to save electricity. The dishwasher is a more efficient use of water. Handwashing uses your own muscles in place of electricity!
dishwasher saved me time and money. especially on those days you have company over and there are a lot of dishes to wash.
I don't have a dishwasher and I live alone. I don't like paper plates much and I would run out of dishes before I filled the DW full to make an efficient load. So I always wash by hand. I try to wash in the dirtiest sink, clean the other basin with hot dishsoap water, rinse with the sprayer, and then plug it to rinse the dishes. When the dishes are done I rack them up to air dry, then I pour windex or vinegar into the rinse water, and clean all my surfaces with it before I pull the plug...this means sinks, counters and backsplash, stovetop, under stovetop, sometimes I take apart the burners and soak them in the washing water, outside of microwave and fridge, and THEN even sometimes I mop with that water. SO I can clean my whole kitchen including dishes, wiping, and sometimes even the floor....with about 3 gallons of water.
You definately save more water and electricity by hand washing.
If you don't let the water run continually while doing dishes, then by hand.
I'd say hand washing, but ars they as clean as a dishwasher?

  • Can chlorinated water (city water) replace dish detergent when hand-washing dishes?

Most city water contains small amounts of chlorine. Since chlorine is considered a cleaning agent, one would think it could replace dish soap to some degree. Can chlorinated water (city water) replace dish detergent when hand-washing dishes?
No, the concentration is far too low to have any effect. Can chlorinated water (city water) replace dish detergent when hand-washing dishes?
    The short answer is NO!
    Chlorine doesn't dissolve grease.
No, it's not enough to clean dishes. If it was, it would be too harmful to drink.
No, there is no sudzing action from Chlorinated water. and the levels of chlorine is not high enough to clean or disinfect anything.

    Alex
No way man! It's not enough to kill germs and you'll never get the slime off your dishes. ICK
I'd still use dish soap, just to be 100%. It wouldnt' get grease out like dish soap

When hand washing dishes, are you saving more water than you would if you put them in the dishwasher?

how much water does a dishwasher use anyway? I am renting a house and the unit is faily old looking, maybe from the 90's, so i doubt it has any water-saving feature. I've noticed though, that with a sink full of dirty dishes, im still using a lot of water...so...what to do?When hand washing dishes, are you saving more water than you would if you put them in the dishwasher?
It is cheaper to use the dishwasher. If your concerned about saving don't use the drying cycle. When hand washing dishes, are you saving more water than you would if you put them in the dishwasher?
Typically, if you run the dishwasher when it's full and without the heat cycle at the end, it saves water and energy over washing by hand.

Would you wear thin vinyl underneath your rubber gloves while washing dishes?

for the women, I know some of you don't have a dishwasher, and you want to get the dishes really clean, put on the vinyl or a thin pair of the winter gloves before you put on the rubber gloves, so when you wash dishes, you can use hot water without getting burned. let me know how it works.Would you wear thin vinyl underneath your rubber gloves while washing dishes?
This is silly. You don't need water THAT hot to properly wash dishes. If it is so hot it is burning your hands, it is too hot.Would you wear thin vinyl underneath your rubber gloves while washing dishes?
    im sorry.

i have a cleaning lady for that.

Question about washing dishes by hand, details below?

the more dishes you have in the sink, the longer its gonna take to wash them?Question about washing dishes by hand, details below?
Well, yes. Consider using paper plates.Question about washing dishes by hand, details below?
    Obviously silly pants!
Not necessarily. By the time you are midway through your sink full, some of the food stuck on the dishes will come off alot easier because they have had time to soak.
i hear ya on this one. i have to do dishes so i tend to clean as i go. when i am making dinner i fill up my sink and as i get done using something i toss it in the sink by the time i am done cooking dinner the only dishes i have left are the ones we have eaten off.
Best way for washing dishes by hand: When done eating, immediately rinse them in cold running water, stack them on the counter. Then (if you have a dishpan) or sink, fill up with straight hot tap water and dish soap. Put the glassware in first, wash, rinse (with hot tap water), place in dish rack. Then do other dishes, till pots/pans are done. You can let them air dry, or take a dish towel, and dry them, put them away. By rinsing, and soaking the dishes, it will make it a quicker, easier job of washing them. Hope this helps. Take care.
    Yes ; )
    YES
    naturally
not necessarilly! but you should have done the dishes as they were used
yes, that only makes sense to me.
no because they will have soaked the food off them and wash quicker..
    Yeah =)
not really . if you wash the big objects first , pots pan麓s this gives you more space to work. then cutlery with sponge a little water , rub all the cutlery with detergent ,once you have given them a good sponge clean rinse them with very hot water , they will dry very quick . then dry properly and put away , do the same with the plates . remove all left over , again with sponge and detergent, good rub . then with very hot water rinse well , then dry straight away . . glasses with detergent then the same very hot water , the thing about dishes the more you let them pile up the more frighting they look to clean
I prefer to wash my dishes by hand and you know there clean . The dishwaher takes an hour alteast to wash them. And it wont take that long to do a sht load of dishes.

Which of the following uses more electricity: washing dishes individually with hot water or using dish washer?

once everyday?Which of the following uses more electricity: washing dishes individually with hot water or using dish washer?
Hi I have been doing electrical work for over 15 years. I cant give you a solid number because there parts that I don't know. If you are washing dishes once a day how many dishes are we talking about, and how long does it take you to wash them. I can give you my opinion. O.k. lets think about this. When you wash dishes by hand, you are only drawing electricity for the hot water heater to heat the water. When you use the dish washer you are drawing electricity for the hot water heater and the dish washer. The dish washer will probably save you alittle on water consumption, but its more for convienance then anything. So as long as it doesnt take you 30 minutes to wash dishes by hand and your water company doesnt charge an outrages price for water. Then washing dishes by hand is cheaper.Which of the following uses more electricity: washing dishes individually with hot water or using dish washer?
Dish washer uses more. Room air drys dishes washed by hand. Electricity drys dishes in washer.
If you want to know the specifics applicable to your situation (gas water heater, electric water heater, dishwasher with its own water heater, etc) check your utility provider's website. Ours has a calculator which lets you put in your variables and it calculates the costs based on the information you provide and their rate structures.
It really depends on the efficiency of the dish washer and the actual way you wash dishes. Since the specifics are vague, its near impossible to answer. But typically speaking, you would probably save money using the dishwasher due to the fact that the ';green movement'; would have already attacked diswashers as being bad for the environment. Instant hot water (tankless water heaters use a lot of electricity)
Depends on whether or not your hot water tank is electric.
my house is all electric. i completly stoped using my dishwasher and saved around $100 a month
    using a dish washer.

When washing dishes what is the correct order?

When washing dishes by hand, the correct order is ...

    1) Glasses, dishes, cutlery, pots and pans

    2) Glasses, cutlery, dishes, pots and pans

    3) Dishes, glasses, cutlery, pots and pans

    4) Pots and pans, glasses, cutlery, dishes

im pretty sure its between 1 and 2 just cant decideWhen washing dishes what is the correct order?
    In my opinion...

    1) Glasses, dishes, cutlery, pots and pansWhen washing dishes what is the correct order?
We always did it the first way, but then, that was WAAYYYYYYYY long ago, in the Dark Ages, before we had a dishwasher. And now my wife does the dishes any ol' way she feels like it since she kept laughing at my way of doing them. She laughs or ridicules me in my way, SHE can do it ALL her way. She does all the laundry too, for the same reason. And to think, before I met her, I'd been doing all my own dishes and laundry for decades. I enjoy this new-found luxury. God Bless you.
I rinse all the washing up first, and get most chunks of left over food off them, then do plates and bowls, etc., glasses and cups, cutlery then pots, pans and bakeware. Everything gets rinsed in HOT water after being washed, then left out to dry.
I do order number 2. I put the cutlery in the bottom to soak a bit, then wash the glasses.

Then put the dishes in the sink and do them.

Then soak/wash the pots and pans.
When I was young my mother said cultery first, that away you put it in as you go and nothing left to get cut. Then the glasses, plates, dishes, pots %26amp; pans. Kinda cleanest to dirtiest(?word).
    number two.

    ';you don't want to get the glasses greasy first';

    then you do cutlery.

    and dishes, and so on.

pots %26amp; pans are last because they're the most greasiest.
Number 2. When washing dishes you should go from least dirty to most dirty so that your washcloth/gloves don't get soggy food bits on the less dirty dishes.
    the correct order would be:

    Cutlery

    Glasses

    Dishes

    Pots and Pans

    then change water.
    2
    number two.
well i've been washing dishes for 30 yrs... and all ive got to say is...thank god for dishwashers!!!!

Do dishwashers really use less water than washing dishes by hand?

cause my mom uses it everyday and says that it does but i kinda find that hard to believe. anyways, is it true?Do dishwashers really use less water than washing dishes by hand?
yes. dishwasher is using all of the water and doesnt waste anything. except before putting the dishes in the dishwasher, you should scrub large pieces, not wash with water.

its possible to save water while washing with hands. get everything wet and then use water only to create more foam with the sponge. there is no need for water to run while you scrub the plate. when you are finished, rinse all of it with water.

dishwasher is also good at something else: washing at high temperatures. except if you can stand the temperatures of 70 degrees of celsius, with gloves on.Do dishwashers really use less water than washing dishes by hand?
I've been told it uses less because it uses the jets from a variety of angles, as opposed to holding a plate under the faucet and turning it this way and that to rinse it off.

A lot depends, not only on the size of the machine, but also how many dishes you're doing at a time.

Obviously, if you only fill it half full, it's a waste. So, while it's really good for families, it's not so great for a single person, unless they wait until it's full.

Thus speaks a person who was taught from an early age that doing dishes by hand was good for you! (Builds character, and all that.) %26lt;g%26gt; But, actually, the advice of doing dishes has been repeated to me by my doctor -- not for the caharacter, but because I tend to get sinus infections and doing the dishes by hand is a better use of hot water than just steaming your head.
As surprising as it is dishwashers CAN actually use less water than washing by hand, as long as the dishwasher is only run when full.

However, this depends on the water efficiency of both the dishwasher and the person washing the dishes by hand.

As a rule of thumb, if you are a bit wasteful with water when washing the dishes yourself, run the dishwasher on a full load.
rarely is something like this ';always true';.

some folks pre-wash the dishes, then, when they're clean, put 'em in the dishwasher.

in that case, they're mostly using the dishwasher to clean off the germs.

    and it uses more water.

on the other hand, if you clean off the table, put the stuff in the dishwasher, and start it, it clearly uses less water than washing by hand in most cases.

however, i suppose i could wash by hand, in a dish pan, with a rinse pan, and use less water than the dishwasher, but i'm not at all sure i'd really like to eat off those dishes.

there are an awful lot of cases in this world where there just isn't a yes or no answer.
It depends on how many dishes you do and how you wash them. I've seen so many people hand wash their dishes before putting them into the dishwasher. That seems counterproductive.

Well, I know there's a water-saving cycle, and many people won't run the dishwasher until it is crammed full, which means they are not running it more than once a day or even less. Then again the amount of use depends on the number of people using it.

My hubby and I don't use our dishwasher. Instead we do dishes by hand. I fill the dishpan with dishwater in the morning and we reuse it until the last dish is washed in the evening.

If you fill another basin with rinse water, then that also saves on water, although we don't reuse the rinse water as we do the dishwater.
I think it depends on the size of the dishwasher; and a good way to conserve water is too fill up one side of your sink about 1/4 up with water, and putting some dish detergent in the running water, and then wash your dishes in that. It's useful because you're using the same water again and again. This is what I do.

    Answer mine too!

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;鈥?/a>
This is something your dishwasher maker would like you and your mom to believe. Rubbish. We use less than 10 litres of water a day for 5 people and that wouldn't run a dishwasher for 5 minutes.
dishwashers use more well actually it depends on if you waste water while washing dishes but most the time dishwasher uses way more
    i think it doesnt

How do they make sponges, like the ones used in washing dishes, cars, etc?

Two ways: There are the natural loofah spinges, which are marine creatures. They construct a sponge skeleton around them, and after harvesting, drying and treating them you have a usable sponge.

Most sponges today, however, are made of plastic. One kind of plastic (polypropylene I believe, there are probably others) gets mixed with a foaming agent . This bubbles up, the plastic sets around it, then the agent is flushed out. What remains is a sponge. How do they make sponges, like the ones used in washing dishes, cars, etc?
There are two different types of sponges, natural and manmade. A type of natural sponge called a luffa comes from the squash family of plants. They are dried, creating the cavities in the sponge.

Cellulose is derived from wood pulp, sodium sulphate, and hemp fiber. Other materials needed are chemical softeners, which break the cellulose down into the proper consistency, bleach, and dye. These are most likely the sponges you are asking about.

There are also sea sponges which are also natural.

I was just washing dishes and my back started hurting bad?

Could it be because my boobs are so huge, or because I weigh too much? I am 14, girl, 5'3.5 and 133 pounds. My boobs are B38 but I am starting to think I might need a C.I was just washing dishes and my back started hurting bad?
Change your postition just get the dishes done and stop worrying about your boobs....get the job done, then you can go sit. Really, you should not even have to spend so much time at the sink if you would just get the dishes done. Stop fooling around...get it over with.I was just washing dishes and my back started hurting bad?
it could be partially your boobs but mostly cuz of how you stand. i notice that my back hurts after a while and its because you stand over the sink in a slightly unnatural position and it slightly strains your back. try standing with your feet a little more than shoulder width apart. it may help
I suggest you start doing yoga, after you give it time, and if it persists check with a doctor to see its not serious, how active are you in exercises ?
You probably need to strengthen your core. Do sit ups and other ab excercises and it should help with your back.
that is not your issue young lady, your issue may be your feet or your spinal alignment. talk with your doctor to schedule with an orthopaedist to see if it is your footsies causing your pain.
perhaps u do need a c cup...however the pain is completely normal, happens to me all the time n most ofter women i know who dont have a tight core...work on ur core.
get a better bra. and remember to stretch your muscles. through your back and legs hips and arms.
it must be a muscle spasm, take some rest on bed, try an NSAID like diclofenac
it means all the iron in your blood turned to lead and moved to your a$$.

I am a party worker; Hostessing, washing dishes, serving and cooking. I need work part time.?

Also check www.craigslist.com, they have a lot of local jobs.

Good luck!I am a party worker; Hostessing, washing dishes, serving and cooking. I need work part time.?
My cousin started out doing that as an offshoot of her housecleaning business and ended up owning her own restaurant. You could try calling personal chefs or caterers and see if they need help. Another option is to call temp agencies about banquet serving jobs. I made some nice cash for a while doing that, and it was fun!I am a party worker; Hostessing, washing dishes, serving and cooking. I know it may sound a little over-rated because it gets alot of negative feedback, but you could try posting the services you offer on myspace. It really can be a good marketing tool if used properly.

Craigslist.com is also quite helpful in finding local job opportunities, just be careful because it is a free site and anyone can post wanted ads.

You could also try the typical job search sites, such as:

    yahoojobs.com

    monster.com

and your local newspaper website will have a classified section with job opportunities.

    Good luck in your search!

Washing dishes as oposed to dishwasher?

I have heard that it is more economical to use the dishwasher once every couple of days as opposed to washing up the same amount of dishes the conventional way.

Which uses less water?Washing dishes as oposed to dishwasher?
It depends. If you live on your own it is probably easier, cheaper and more economical to wash dishes by hand after each meal - but don't leave the tap running and do not overfill the sink with hot water (if anything, use a plastic bowl and also use the water to wipe down the cooker and surfaces too).

If you are washing up for a family, a dishwasher is more economical, especially if you load it throughout the day, run it overnight and unload it in the morning. Just make sure you scrape every scrap of food off the plates before loading the dishwasher.Washing dishes as oposed to dishwasher?
Conventional for ecology, and it's actually quicker and cheaper.
Probably using the dishwasher every other day. Saves your hands too hehe.
Dishwashers are environmentally very un-friendly, I sold my slimline Bosch one as I never used it, it's far better to use your hands, also stops you becomming lazy.
Apparently washing dishes. But I reckon if you just make sure you fill up your dish washer before turning it on (to the eco cycle!) you're doing alright!
    the dishwasher.

It p's me off that my kitchen is too small to fit a dishwasher
How do you wash the same number of dishes in the dishwasher every couple of days as you do everyday by hand? Do you eat off dirty dishes the other days that you're not using the dishwasher?
IF your hot water heater is electric or gas it dosen't matter. (right now gas is cheeper) BUT....

Using the dishwasher uses LESS Electricity or gas than the hot water you waste washing and rinsing dishes by hand.

Using the dishwasher (newer model, less than 4-years old, approx.) also uses LESS water than doing dishes by hand.
    for everyday- dishwasher

if u use the dishwasher 1 a week and would wash the dishes everyday probably the sink...
It may be but the savings are negligible; anyway it's not good hygiene to leave crockery around for 2/3 days. Washing up after every meal is good housekeeping.
It would depend on a few things.

One method is to fill your sink, place the washed, but un-rinsed dishes in a separate basin. Once all of the dishes are washed, you rinse them and then (ideally) use a third basin to disinfect them, and let them air dry. This method uses a minimum amount of water. If you would only be running the dishwasher every three or four days, you would need to use longer cycles and these use more water and energy.

If you run the dishwasher, full and every two days (or more often) and you have a newer, energy star one, then you are most likely better off using the dishwasher.
    the dishwasher
If my husband is doing the dishes, he uses the most water - all of it on the floor, the work surface and himself! So in our house, the dishwasher is more economical - providing it's fully loaded.
washing in the sink. oh sorry l forget l have a 2 leged dishwasher its called a hubby.
It may depend upon your dishwasher, how much water it uses to wash/rinse a load...and how you hand wash your dishes...do you leave the water running when you wash and/or rinse? Do you fill the sink with soapy water on one side, clear water on the other side and that's all that is used? Do you use water rinsing your dishes before they go in the dishwasher? If so, count that water used as part of that whole process...soak some dishes before washing them (by hand or dishwasher?), if so, there's additional water use.
Dishwashers typically use less water than washing up the old fashioned way !

They also clean dishes better and prevent bacteria etc remaining as they wash at high temperatures whereas to wash up in the kitchen sink we would use water that is merely ';hand hot'; and often a lot cooler than the water used in a dishwasher. Therefore not killing off bacteria and giving a really good clean.

All in all dishwashers are better.
You have the right idea! Hand washing is great (uses more water) if you don't just stand there and leave the water run but, if you have allot of dishes, the dishwasher is more economical, you may not want to have a hot dry cycle, it uses lots of electric.
dishwashers are for lazy people.hand washing gets them cleaner
i dont know my wife is my dish washer,, costs nothing but does require a regular service
a dishwash if u get the right 1 and put it on the right setting.
    Handwashed dishes
it's a question of ecconomy over cleanliness I think. I certainly wouldnt want to wait a couple of days while my dishwasher filled up with old food rotting away on the plates - unless you rinse them before putting them in, and that use water!
I have a dishwasher called Nikki!!

And to answer the rest of the question! If you use your dishwasher once a month then you would use less water!! So yes dishwasher then!!
handwashing uses less electricity and electricity cost is higher than water.
there`s nothing better than washing up your dishes yourself. i think it`s lazy and too easy touse a dishwasher, i`m the dishwasher
washing by hand saves water and electricity. if you can, rinse your dishes clean, leave stand untill you have a sink full, or untill you warm your water for a bath. whilst having a bath, leave your dishes soak in the sink. when finished with your bath; wipe and rinse dishes, then leave them to drip dry, as drying with a cloth is un-hygenic

Do you wear Rubber Gloves whilst washing dishes?

If so, what brand / type / colour do you recommend using for extended periods of dishwashing, such as pot washing in a commercial kitchen?

Thanks!Do you wear Rubber Gloves whilst washing dishes?
I only was dishes at home, so no I do not wear rubber gloves.

If I did wear them, I would wear cute ones.

If I worked in a commercial kitchen washing dishes I would definitely wear rubber gloves for safety. In fact, I would assume it is a requirement. The employer should provide them. The gloves protect your hands from many issues including hot water, cuts from silverware or broken dishes and infection.

Because I do not work in a commercial kitchen I do not know what brand / type / or colour to recommend. The most I can guess is the glove should be long to your elbow and aren't they always yellow or black? I would recommend that you google commercial rubber gloves and start checking what you find there.Do you wear Rubber Gloves whilst washing dishes?
i have worked in a lot of different restaurants and never saw the dishwashers wear gloves

they are moving to fast to be held up by gloves and your hands get use to the heat

i personally have asbestos fingers as most food servers get after a time

and i am fearing you are asking cause you have a fetish and not cause you are a dishwasher
Not at home, yes when I worked in a commercial kitchen, the water was too hot and full of chemicals. I bought my own heavy duty ones from local supermarket but after a month they got a hole. Perhaps there are commercial-brand ones that last longer.
Yeah I need to use them because the feeling on my fingers is just horrible!

I say you look at your locl supermarket and you should try to pick blue ones?

    Loads of love x
Yes I do, yellow ones, size medium.

    Washing dishes with toilet gloves?

I have a new roomate. i told her several times not to use them, becuase we used them to use the toilet. She doesn't wanna wash the dishes without gloves becuase she could hurt her nails, so she went behind my back at night and washed the dishes with them. I was willing to wash them myself, which i have done a few times already, even though the deal was I cook and she clean. she agreed. I would rather do it myself than have her promise and not do it. I'm furious and i donno what to do. am i right to be angry? how sck will we get from this? she thinks clorox will fix everything, but i think it's overrated, esspecially for this. what should i do?Washing dishes with toilet gloves?
She is nasty! In addition, why can't you buy her another set of gloves, they are relatively cheap. Also, that is not very practical... not sure how unsanitary but I see how that could irritate you.

Try buying paper products as well, to limit the number of dishes you have.Washing dishes with toilet gloves?
OK, you just made me terribly sick to my stomach.

    ugh!

This could make you very ill!

When you buy gloves, buy two different colors, one for the kitchen and one for the bathroom.

If this fails to keep the gloves in the proper places, I'd say cook and clean your own, and let her do for herself.
Just get another pair for kitchen use only.
Buy a box of surgical gloves (it is what I always use) at the pharmacy...they can be thrown out after each use....you can clean the toilet with them, throw them out, no one can use them on something else. She can use them to wash dishes, then be thrown out...that way everyone can be happy.
Clean the toilet with her tooth brush then rinse it off in the dish water......Same thing! She if she likes fecal matter in her mouth. Then get a new roommate.
Buy a second, differnt-color pair of gloves. On them, write DISHES ONLY w/ a black Sharpie pen. Place them where she can easily find them under the sink.

On the toilet pair, write TOILET ONLY.
go to the dollar store and buy another pair .....prob solved
OK....well i definitely agree with the fact that the bathroom items should not be mixed with the kitchen items!!!!!!!! and people think i'm just to picky with situations like this! well the only thing i can tell u is to disinfect all ur dishes, silverware, cups and throw out the sponge she used along with the gloves, and buy different color gloves for the kitchen from the bathroom ones. and if this ever happens again- which it shouldn't- solve this problem with disposable plates and cutlery. hope my answer was of some help.
Pee in the sink and see how she responds. Or you can buy her a pair of gloves for the dishes.
Germ germ i wouldn't want to eat off dishes that were washed in that way,now is the time to go out and buy a box of rubber gloves for the room mate and make sure she uses the right pair for the toilet and the kitchen ,i keep mine seperate the toilet ones stay in the toilet the kitchen ones stay in the kitchen.
Go buy more gloves or start using all paper plates, cups, etc. Maybe you can make sure to get the dishes done first.
Buy another pair of gloves in a different color and leave them by the kitchen sink......yes, that is sick
buy another set of gloves to use at the kitchen sink.
It won't kill I wash my dishes IN the toilet...it's great if you don't have a dishwasher, add soap and dishes, flush a couple times and your done! In short, just chill about it, it's not a big deal.

When washing dishes by hand is there any health risks when you don't rinse them after the soap wash.?

In other words, can the soap scum be harmful? When washing dishes by hand is there any health risks when you don't rinse them after the soap wash.?
Yes, by not rinsing thoroughly, your leaving bacteria and the soap behind which are causes of diarrhea and vomiting at the best. Why would you leave this behind? If your not sure after you rinse with the hot water and get all the food off the dishes then give them a final rinse with cool water. It breaks the soap down better than hot or warm. I know it sounds weird, but it's true. I hope this hint will help you. When washing dishes by hand is there any health risks when you don't rinse them after the soap wash.?
In that small of an amount, soap isn't poisonous, but it tastes nasty. It could make whatever you eat/drink from the dish next time have a bad flavor. It could also make you foam at the mouth, lol. (not really!)
no - soap is what eliminates the bacteria / germs from the dishes. Soap dosn't contain anything harmful.

Is washing dishes in cold water effective?

Haven't had gas in about 6 months, (which means no hot water.) Is doing them in cold water cleaning them, more than just physicallyIs washing dishes in cold water effective?
Yes. It will be fine as long as your detergent is capable of removing oily/greasy substances. Warm water works better with grease, but you can make it work.

Using hot water to ';clean'; is easier but it doesn't actually kill germs or anything. If the water was hot enough to kill germs, you wouldn't be able to tolerate the heat long enough to wash the dishes.

Now if you are talking about a dishwasher machine, the water is hot enough to do some germ killing.

Just use an antibacterial detergent. You'll make it through.

Oh, one more thing...do you have an electric stove or microwave?

If so, you can heat some water to wash with if it makes you more comfortable. Is washing dishes in cold water effective?
I went through a time where I went without gas all I did was use one of my pans to boil water and got it boiling hot then I added a little soap to it, ran cold water to make it go through the water and cool it enough to touch. I wouldn't trust cold water because hot water kills germs that cold water has no way of killing. Also try boiling water in pans for an easy clean on stuck on food.
No, it is not hygienic. Can you not boil up some water in the kettle or microwave? Be careful with the boiling water though. Good luck. Hope you get your gas connected soon.

POLL: which one is more efficient washing dishes from a 6 member family by a dishwasher or wash it by hand?

Saw recently on ';Going Green'; that the dishwasher uses less water and electricity than hand washing dishes. Hand washing uses more water %26amp; more electricity reheating water than a dishwasher. Dishwasher also uses a harsher detergent %26amp; hotter water so it can sterilize dishes.POLL: which one is more efficient washing dishes from a 6 member family by a dishwasher or wash it by hand?
I'd have to say by hand if you have that many people to help do them. We're only 3 people, and my husband and daughter bemoaned the fact our current rental does not have a dishwasher. I said oh no, washing dishes by hand is not only faster for me, but the dishes get cleaner than the dishwasher. I was actually annoyed with having a dishwasher because of the dishes not getting clean, and because we all got lazy and the dishes going into the dishwasher would pile up, and when it's hot like it is now, stink.

But now, we do them after dinner, and they don't pile up. We usually don't dry them by hand, but let them dry in the rack. We live in Southern California so they're dry almost immediately.

For you guys though, you could have a line of washer, dryers, and putting away. I used to do this with my family when I was little and it was great. We actually enjoyed it because we talked and laughed and it went by quickly.POLL: which one is more efficient washing dishes from a 6 member family by a dishwasher or wash it by hand?
Dishwasher undoutedly. It willl wash them quicker and get them more sanitary.

  • Does using a dishwasher or hand washing dishes use less water?

My new apartment came with a dish washer and I'm responsible for the water bill, so I want to use as little water as possible. The dish washer is a whirlpool with the energy star. Would it use less water to just run the dish washer when it's full or to hand wash?

ThanksDoes using a dishwasher or hand washing dishes use less water?
Believe it or not, a dishwasher uses less water. If it's just you, then you won't have to run the dishwasher daily, which will be even cheaper. However, make sure you rinse the dishes %26amp; silverware well before putting them into the dishwasher. Doing that, cuts down on the odor, until you run your dishwasher. Use the ';Heat'; option on your dishwasher, to dry the dishes, etc. or you'll end up with spots. There should be a place on the door for adding ';Rinse %26amp; Dry'; which eliminates spots. I like a dishwasher because it gets the water much hotter than what comes out of the faucet. That kills the bacteria, causing fewer colds.Does using a dishwasher or hand washing dishes use less water?
    Shortstuff13.....bacteria doesn't cause colds...viruses do. Report Abuse

Disconnect the drain line on the dishwasher and put it into a five gallon pail while you do a load of dishes and compare the amount you use. You will also have disconnect the j pipe under your sink and catch all the water you use during your hand washing. This is quite physical but the results will be precise.
Try one month on dish wash

and try one month on hand wash

it various from family to family, some family don't wash dishes for weeks (ewwwwww), then suddenly use the dish washer and some just constantly use it :P

You will have to do a trial and error :P
Dishwasher. There was recently an experiment done to answer this question. Also, using a dishwasher is more sainitary.

Hand washing will use less water and power. Once you get into the habit of washing up every time you use some dishes it is almost easier than rinsing and stacking dishes for a dish washer.
hand wash them saves electricity and water(if you dont run the tap for half an hour lol)
    Hand washing uses less

Is there a term that describes when you're washing dishes and a spoon redirects the flow of water onto you?

There has to be a term besides ';idiotic';... this situation happens every once in a while and makes a huge mess in the kitchen. It usually requires a pretty heavy stream of water from the faucet and a reasonably deep spoon to be most effective! Is there a term that describes when you're washing dishes and a spoon redirects the flow of water onto you?
I'm not much of a wiz in the sink and I get this a lot...

Personally, I call it 'Spwned' - a combination of spoon and pwned (gamers slang for getting owned).

    Used in a sentance: ';Oooo ROFL! I just got spwned! LOL!';

Matt DIs there a term that describes when you're washing dishes and a spoon redirects the flow of water onto you?
I personally just always called it ';splashing';.

I don't know if there is actually an ';official'; word to go with your definition
    ';splashback';
a rebound of water or a splash attack or spoonage (as i like to call it lol)
    Yes, it's called wet.
    Yes, wet tshirt contest! lol
I'd call it 'A pain in the ****'

Is washing dishes for 7.25 an hour bad or good for a first job?

Not much responsibility right? Not gonna lie, I don't have a lot of experience washing dishes, but it can't be too hard right? Is washing dishes for 7.25 an hour bad or good for a first job?
Washing dishes is a lot of hard work. It's not easy at all, especially if you are at a busy restaurent and have to be fast. It's a good job though. Is washing dishes for 7.25 an hour bad or good for a first job?
I don't think it would be too hard but it might be hectic especially if the place you work is busy but it is an ok first job, just try not to stay there too long.
I think it's a good start. But have a goal or a future besides this.
For a first job, it's ok. You don't want to wash dishes all your life.

When washing dishes by hand, should you rinse with hot or cold water?

While cold water will rinse off the suds faster (hot water creates suds), hot water is necessary to continuing to sanitize your dishes and kill bacteria. This website indicates that if you use cold water, you have to add bleach to it.When washing dishes by hand, should you rinse with hot or cold water?
if you use cold water it help with water spots

What Is The Point Of Pre-Washing Dishes?

When one gets a dishwasher I would assume that you don't have to wash by hand anymore. When my friend got hers she used to wash the dishes and everything else by hand and then put them in the dishwasher.

I thought the dishwasher takes care of that for you. What is the point of washing dishes before loading them in the machine? What Is The Point Of Pre-Washing Dishes?
It's a good idea to rinse the big stuff off. And especially red sauces.

But I think the practice of actually washing the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher came from a time in the past where dishwashers really weren't that good at their job and neither were the detergents used in them. You'd often find nothing came out clean so people washed every last bit of food off the plate first.

Now dishwashers are so good at what they do, most modern ones even have built in food disposals. But those who were reprimanded as kids for not washing the dishes before loading the dishwasher... well old habits die hard. What Is The Point Of Pre-Washing Dishes?
Depends on the age of your dishwasher how effectively they can ';scrub'; dried on food.

The one I just got years ago can scrub off nearly anything - even if it sat in the rack for nearly a week before I filled it up enough to make a decent load.

If your friends dishwasher is leaving spots she should check for lime deposits blocking her drain, at most RINSE the dishes and try a little baking soda (1-2 Tablespoons) and vinegar (1/4 to 1/3 cup) in there once a month when you run a load to help reduce the scale.
I rinse my dishes before I put them in the dishwasher. They come out cleaner and the food's not baked on.
You don't really wash them completely. You rinse the dishes off because dishwashers don't always get the caked on food off. So, you have to wash them by hand if you don't rinse them anyway.
it means that you have to rinse off all the loose food stuck to the plate just like you should before you wash up by hand so that it keeps the water you wash in cleaner for longer . you don't want bits of food floating around in the washing up water that your trying to clean the things you eat off.
back in the day when dishwashers were new, they recommended a pre-rinse to loosen up stuff. Not so anymore, just scrape scraps off and load. All she is doing is wasting water.
All the above answers are true. While some modern dishwashers have disposals, a lot are still just standard with a mesh screen to catch food particles and stop them from clogging the drain. One should rinse the dishes to keep the food chunks from hanging out in the dishwasher.
Pre washing them loosens up all of the stuck on food. If u don't have a full load every time u are done eating, then the dishes sit in there and the food gets caked on.

Why does my back always start hurting while im washing dishes?

it never fails. ive never had any back problems before and for years my back start hurting while im washing the dishes. do you know why this happens? Why does my back always start hurting while im washing dishes?
It's because you try to bend over in the sink to make sure the water doesn't get everywhere. If there are a lot of dishes, take a break after 10 minutes or so. You stand in the same position for too long and that's what makes your back hurt. Why does my back always start hurting while im washing dishes?
Mine does the same thing. My husband used to laugh at me, he thought I was just trying to get out of doing dishes. Anyway, I think the other person is right about the slouching part, also I started wearing my shoes (walking/running shoes, with arch support) when I started making dinner and all the way through to doing dishes and I feel tremendously better.

    Hope this helps!
IT COULD BE FROM YOUR POSTURE. I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM.. MY FEET ARE FLAT AND TO COMPENSATE FOR THE FLAT FEET MY POSTURE IS A LITTLE OFF AND IT MAKES MY BACK HURT...IT COULD BE THAT OR IT MAY MEAN YOU SHOULD GO TO THE DR OR THE CHIROPRACTER...
if you are standing on a hard floor surface, try to find something soft to stand on like a rug or foam...and dont slouch
I have the same problem. I wonder if my sink is too low and it causes some kind of strain. It always starts around my shoulder blades and then moves lower in my back. It could also be I really hate to wash dishes. lol!
Sarge gave you a good answer however there are ways of helping this one is to stand on one foot with your other foot resting on the inside of your knee. I know it sounds ridiculous but it helps give it a try what have you got to loose.
ur sink is 2 low...get the unit raised 6'; or so
Your back hurts because it is not in proper alignment when you are leaned over a sink that is usually to stand at without being stooped over. You can try using a small step stool under one foor while you do dishes and alternating feet about halfway through. Sometimes that helps relieve the pressure from your back and place it more firmly on your lower body. Something about weight distribution I think.
sink is the wrong height for you...do some crunches to strengthen your stomach or get a new counter
Try widening your stance (gets your torso lower so that you are not hunching). I am about 6'4'; tall, and if I don't do this, 20 minutes of washing dishes will kill my back. Also, your posture may be bad in general. I had this problem and ended up going to physical therapy for it.
I know I get the same thing becuase I have tile floor which is very hard on your feet and back. If you have a hard floor put a cushiony rug where you stand. Also, is your sink at an awkward level to your body?

    Good luck
yeah its the way you are standing

get a rubber grip rug to stand on, it helps keep your balance over your feet rather than your back
I agree. It's just that you are probably leaning over at an angel while washing your dishes. Mention it to your Dr next time you see him. Maybe it's something else that you've done also and don't realize it.
Because you are standing bent over the sick for too long, my back dose the same thing.
The back muscles have to work a bit harder when you are leaning forward to attend to the dishes in the sink. One way to alleviate this problem is the lean against the sink with your hips. The other is to pay attention to how far you are leaning and attempt to maintain a more upright position.
your sink might be a little too low for you?
its probably the way you are standing. try not to slouch over the sink
Maybe you're not used to being on your feet for long stretches of time. You could try to wash the dishes in shifts. I try to do the dishes as soon as I'm done with them instead of letting them pile up. You could try to get a stool to sit on instead having to stand up and be kind of bent over for a long amount of time.
Bending over a kitchen sink is an unnatural position that puts strain on your back. I have the same problem. The only fix I can think of is to put the sink up higher so I don't have to stoop to do the dishes, and the chances of that happening are zero, so...Maybe you could try sitting on a chair or a stool that puts the sink at a better height so you don't have to bend over...
Things, including our bodies, change over time. Things which bothered us before bother us now. Perhaps it's the way you are standing, your shoes, length of time or you may need a throw rug to stand on.

  • I have a rough hands due to detergents in washing dishes. I used lotion for dry rough hands. Whats the remedy?

I am an office worker and I am not confident everytime we had a visitor cause usually you have to shake hands with them when you entertain guest. Please help me what to do.I have a rough hands due to detergents in washing dishes. I used lotion for dry rough hands. Whats the remedy?
my mom has the same thing and she works in the school cafe doing dishes and her hands get so bad my mom said that Ajaxis easier on her hands while washing dishes and trys to wear gloves while useing harsh cleaning products and detergents, and as for washimg her hands she uses dial lavender and oatimeal and it helps and she also sees a docter and gets lotrzone cream and that works very well hope this helpsI have a rough hands due to detergents in washing dishes. I used lotion for dry rough hands. Whats the remedy?
Buy some white cotton gloves and vaseline .rub your hands with vaseline cover them with the gloves and sleep in them.It works for your feet too.You can use cotton socks on you feet and hands if you don't want to invest in gloves .
Mary Kay has a product called ';Satin Hands'; and it's an exfoliator, a buffer and a cream. When you're done with the process your hands feel soft as can be.

You can find a Mary Kay dealer in the yellow pages under cosmetics.
i use aveeno- otherwise u can go see a dermatologist for a perscription strength remedy
Try cornhusckers lotion or try a lotion from neutrogena
u can use gloves while washing dishes.. use moisturizers.. u can also consult a dermatologist..
yes, rubber gloves. and i read if you put shea butter lotion or cream on your hands before you put on the gloves, the hot water from washing heats the cream and softens your hands better. get the kind with a soft cloth inside so it's not so slippery and icky feeling.
Use rubber gloves when washing dishes. And use an effective moisturizer. One of the best (and yet inexpensive) moisturizers I have found is Suave Advanced Therapy Dry Skin Cream.
Since you are an office worker, i take it you are washing dishes at home.

First i would say prevent it! If you have sensitive skin, don't use harsh chems. A lot of people use vinegar and water for dishes, which is gentler. Or you can try Method dish soap. Method is a 'green' company, so no harsh chemicals, it also comes dye free scent free. Bonus for the skin.

To treat. Exfoliate and use emollient cream. A friend of mine use to work in a juice plant and needed to dip his hands in harsh chemicals to sanitize like a MILLION times a day. I'll tell you what i told him, slather your hands with thick cream, like coco or shea butter, then wear gloves over the lotion for 30min or so, then wipe off the excesses.

All else fails, go see a derm or get a pedicure!

    Good luck.

What's better for the environment? Paper plates for a party or washing dishes for 24?

I'm hosting a baby shower/dinner picnic for 24+. Between dinner plates, cake plates and glasses, is it ';greener'; to use recyclable paper plates/cups or use my dishwasher-- probably 2 loads-- to clean all the china and glass? What's better for the environment? real dishes are for sure better...

resuable ones have to be made.. and then go into landfil.. thus a tree basically died for nothing...

use environmentally friendly dish detergent and there you go...What's better for the environment? Paper plates for a party or washing dishes for 24?
I'd go with having guests bringing their own plates :P

Too extreme? Then maybe washing the dishes myself, instead of using paper plates and plastic utensils..
I hate the idea of one-time use anything because it seems so wasteful so my vote is for providing regular plates and washing them.

Why does the soap lid not open when washing dishes in the dishwasher?

I have a newer dishwasher and never have had problems with it until now. Everytime I want to put away my dishes my dishwasher still has soap in it. What is the problem? I wonder if the dishwasher is not opening during soap time or something. Why does the soap lid not open when washing dishes in the dishwasher?
If the door is not opening at all maybe somethings blocking it. If you have the kind with a turn dial for the settings try closing the detergent door and with the main door open turn the dial and see if it pops open. Otherwise you could try a different kind of detergent maybe a gelpac. Also is the water hot enough? Does it have it's own hot water booster? Why does the soap lid not open when washing dishes in the dishwasher?
That has happened to me a few times. When the door opens the soap has to drop in the bottom of the washer. But, what sometimes happens is theres a pot or something else that it drops on to and it doesn't fall to the bottom and it can't dissolve right. Just make sure no big thing like a pot is right underneath the dispenser.
You might need to cut back on the ammount of soap you are using. Is the soap cup open and empty when you open the door?

Is it all right to add a little bleach to the sink when washing dishes or will Palmolive kill the microbes?

I was told by my sister that adding a little Clorox to the dishwater will kill all the bacteria and germs that ordinary Palmolive or Dawn may not. Is this step necessary or unnecessary? Is it all right to add a little bleach to the sink when washing dishes or will Palmolive kill the microbes?
You dont want to add bleach. You would need to get the concentration of bleach to about 30 parts per million in the water to kill off all bacteria. At that concentration your dishes coming out of the dishwasher would literally smell of clorox bleach.

Your dish dryer, that red hot coil at the bottom, is a much better killer of germs than adding clorox. That is one of the main reasons to dry dishes in the dishwasher. Not only does that heat in there dry, it kills every last microbe. Is it all right to add a little bleach to the sink when washing dishes or will Palmolive kill the microbes?
You run the risk of bleaching out your clothes, towels, etc. Why the paranoia? Most germs are killed by regular soap, scrubbing and rinsing. Be sure to rinse in one direction so the germies all wash down the drain and not back on your plates.
    it wont hurt ur dishes to put some bleach in with it-- restaurants do it all the time.... but, most soaps kill most of the bacteria-- i use Dawn with bleach alternative, and it gets my dishes sparkling clean... I dont really see the need to bleach my dishes {altho, i do run bleach in my dishwasher, but thats mainly for when it smells a little 'funky'}

seriously, i doubt you need to do it, because the soap and hot water will wash most anything away... unless your having problems like MRSA outbreaks etc... but thats pretty uncommon.
You could do that. But read the instructions because some of these products should not be mixed with bleach. You can also buy the products that have antibacterials in them
It's okay to add a little bleach. Before I had a dishwasher, I'd do that when someone in the house was sick with a cold or flu.
    It's okay to add bleach.
Yes its ok. Just not too much though. You also have to be carful no to get it on your clothes.
    you can add bleach
I don't think it is necessary. I use Dawn Anti-bacterial when I wash dishes by hand and no one in my family has gotten sick yet. There are some dish liquids that have bleach alternatives, but just do what you think is best for you or your family. Some people are just germ-a-phobic!
I don't think it is advisable. Both Dawn and Palmolive say not to do so.

    This is from Palmolive's website:

    ';Remember 鈥?never use your dish liquid in an automatic dishwasher, and never mix your dish liquid with bleach or ammonia.';

Do you prefer microfiber or cotton washcloths for washing dishes/cleaning the kitchen?

I've read that sponges harbor bacteria/mildew, so I'm looking forward to using washcloths for now on. And, they're green friendly.Do you prefer microfiber or cotton washcloths for washing dishes/cleaning the kitchen?
I prefer cotton washcloths because they hold聽 the dish soap better, and dry on the sink lip聽 faster ~ they also do not ';slip'; as much when washing the insides of cups and glasses.....Do you prefer microfiber or cotton washcloths for washing dishes/cleaning the kitchen?
I use washcloths period. I have many of both types. Sponges hold too much bacteria and I have no idea why people use them. I see no positive side for using them. Most people dont even replace them often...ewww. Good for you for switching!
If you prefer sponges you can put it in the microwave for 1 minute daily and it kills everything.
Oh I love the microfiber cloths and they're relatively cheap in the auto section of the store!

Hand washing dishes or using the dishwasher- which uses less water?Which way is cheaper?

I have been told the dishwasher uses less, but when you factor in electricity and gas to heat the water... Thanks in advance for your replies.Hand washing dishes or using the dishwasher- which uses less water?Which way is cheaper?
Dishwasher uses less. You have energy saver and saver heat and saver rinse on all your buttons.Hand washing dishes or using the dishwasher- which uses less water?Which way is cheaper?
The average dishwasher uses about 11.5 gallons of water per cycle. I suggest lighly pre-rinsing dirty dishes and waiting run a full load. This would be the best way to conserve water.
hey rottymom just think while the dish washer runs i can be setting down or doing the landury or sewing . its much cheaper to run the dish washer and they are sanitized in the dish washer too. you can also watch a fgood tv show while they wash.
Rott, the dishwasher is cheaper and more effective bay far. There is no way you can hand wash dishes in water that is as hot as what a dishwasher uses. That hot water sterilizes your dishes as well.
Hand washing definitely uses less water and it gets the dishes cleaner. It seems pretty pointless to use a dishwasher when you always need to pre-rinse them to get them clean. On which one's cheaper, I guess that matters how much your time is worth, but since dishwashers use more water, it's more expensive.
It is best to use the dishwasher because of the hot water. The water is hot enough to kill any germs that might be floating around which will keep your family healthier this winter. You can reduce the amount of electricity the dishwasher uses by turning off the heat dry cycle. If you don't have that option, just open the door when the dishwasher gets to that cycle to let the dishes air dry.

A dishwasher may be more expensive than washing by hand, but it is much more sanitary (and easier). You can use the time you save on the dishes tend to an indoor garden. You can grow cherry tomatoes and other salad veggies in your kitchen throughout the winter.
When you figure in the water you waste doing by hand. It's cheaper to use a dishwasher. But I like washing dishes by hand.
Well. dish washer use the same amount of water is every time you load it up, washing by hand is control by your hand %26amp; depends on how many dishes you have, more dishes ,more water, if washing the same number of dishes.mostly more water by hand.

On the new dish washer with energy star on it. they use even less water %26amp; energy.

  • Why is it a good idea to wear rubber gloves when washing dishes using detergents?

detergent molecules are phospholipidlike molecules with highly polar heads and nonpolar tails. Why is it a good idea to wear rubber gloves when washing dishes using detergent? Why is it a good idea to wear rubber gloves when washing dishes using detergents?
Many detergents are designed to tackle tough cleansing jobs. Often, these can be too harsh for a person's skin. Depending on the detergent, time period of each wash, and frequency of washing dishes, the user may want to use rubber gloves to protect their hands. The precise chemical nature mentioned is why the detergent can dry out the skin and damage the skin overtime. It is more intense than a quick wash of the hands with soap and water and thus more aggressive. In any case, a user should consider the risk of the activity and consult a doctor if in doubt. Good luck!

    Ken Armstrong

SafetyClearance.comWhy is it a good idea to wear rubber gloves when washing dishes using detergents?
All science aside - I'm not very good at chemistry - it just plain makes your hands dry, unless you are using a soap that has moisturizer in it. Or at least, that's what I was told.
It just makes your hands dry. The highly polar lipids adhere to water quickly, but the detergent really wont hurt skin

Boil Water Advisory and washing dishes?

My town received heavy rainfall and minor flooding last week. We have been under a boil water advisory for a week. It seems mostly precautionary. I have dipped into my emergency supply of bottled water for drinking. But what about washing dishes? Any tips? Would you wash with hot water from the tap? If not tips on how to boil water and get an optimal temperature to wash?Boil Water Advisory and washing dishes?
Use the largest pots you have and boil the water on your stove. Let it cool enough so that you can use it to wash your dishes. Pour the water into your sink. One side for washing and one side for rinsing. The water in your hot water tank is not hot enough to kill any organisms that may be in your water. So boil before using...:)Boil Water Advisory and washing dishes?
My advice is that using rubber gloves helped, as it meant I could start right away, even while the water was very hot. Report Abuse

Your welcome!! I'm glad it's back to normal...Thanks.:) Report Abuse

When you're in a boild water situation, you want to wash your dishes in boiled water as well. You put on a pot of water and fill up to 1/2 inch from brim. Bring water to a rolling boil and keep it at that boil for 8 minutes to give time for the heat to kill all the bacteria in the water. Then pour into the sink over your dishes. Do the same for your rinse water too.
Washing your dishes would be best done using the hottest water that you can stand with a liberal dose of a chlorine based sanitizer such as bleach. The boiling water point is to kill most of the bacteria in the water. Using a boiling hot water rinse for the dishes would also be a very good idea. Water borne bacteria can be deadly or just a long time of discomfort.
If you dont want to boil the water for washing dishes, which I strongly recomend, another very good way to do it is fill one side of the sink with hot soapy tap water. Fill the other side with plain hot tap water and add about a quarter cup of liquid bleach. After you wash the dishes, let them air dry. Do not use a towel because a towel will wipe off the bleach before it has a chance to kill the germs and bacteria. Also, using a towel can redistribute any missed bacteria, germs, food particles, which turns your dishes into large petri dishes. Eww I know but true.

Ladies if you are washing dishes and a huge rat comes out dragging a rattrap because it didnt quite kill him?

why the cat will finish it off, oh wait that is the rat trap and she was playing with it first, cats will be cats...... then take it from the cat and bury it or did I just throw it out.... can't remember it was not that big a deal

;) only happened once about 10 years ago and the cat was dragging the rat...... and we have moved twice since then....lol and I have 2 dishwashers now, my children and a MaytagLadies if you are washing dishes and a huge rat comes out dragging a rattrap because it didnt quite kill him?
call the SWAT team. Hahaha. I'd just stare than get my hoe, as in gardening tool, and BAM!
ROFL, let the rat go! or take it to the vet!
I would be horrified that someone had done such a cruel thing to a defencless animal. I'd be abolsultely digusted. I'd hit it over the head with something heavy to put it out of it's misery. If a neighbour had done it I'd have a strong word with them, afterall not only is it cruel but it could hurt a pet.

I have had pet fancy rats for years, they are wonderful intelligent, clean and loving creatures.

Althought htis wouldn't happen, I don't do dishes.

Oh Hennifer, just because you would faint, he was asking ladies!
Stomp! him, remove the trap, toss him in the stew, just like Mom taught me.
kill the dayum thing myself, then move you've got a problem as those things hang around filth
Of course, you are fishing for a certain type of answer because it's probably your belief that a woman would just scream and demand that the man take care of the problem.

However, I'm pretty sure I can dispatch of a rat stuck in a trap quite efficiently. Yes, it would be gross, but I would try and make it as humane as possible. But I don't use those kind of traps, so it's not likely that I would ever be faced with that situation.

    Have a nice day!
    Shriek first, kill later.

I don't want to imagine a rat which can drag a rattrap that couldn't kill it. Scary.
I would capture him in a box and rush him to the vet. Rats are cute.

We've had field mice in the house. I generally corner the little guys, put them in an old peanut butter jar with holes I drilled in the cap, and then hike out a few miles in the nearby park and set them free with a bit of food to tide them over.
Used to play ice hockey and still have a couple sticks in the closet ...

    .... so I would grab one and then think to myself, ';Wrist shot or slapper?';

    .
    sorry i wouldn't live anywhere it's rat infested !!!!!
    Call my husband immediately!
I grab the rat and save it to throw on you.
I only set ';Have a Heart'; traps because I like mice and rats. Sorry to burst your bubble.
I'd call a man to take care of it. If no one was around I'd shoo it out with a broom and faint!
Stomp the rat's head. That will kill it the quickest.
Um. I had this happen last year....the mouse only caught its foot in the trap and it was very much alive. I made the mistake of looking into those beady little eyes and I just couldn't bear to kill it. And since hubs was at work....LOL.....I actually phoned my dad to come and step on it for me! He lives a couple blocks away so he could come and help me. I just don't like killing animals....I can't do it.
I rarely wash the dishs lol! Id put gloves on and put him in the backyard and it will run off himself.
give me a broom and stand back!!!!
ummm. I LEAVE UNTILL MY HUSBAND GET HOME!!! : 0
I would wonder who the hell left a rat trap in my house when I have a perfectly good cat. I would kill it and let my cat have at it. No need to call my boyfriend that lives an hour away to do something I am more than capable of doing myself.
In answering your question - One kills the RAT oneself.

    Simple.
I pick the rat up by the tail, open the front door, and throw it away 鈥?by myself.
Rats don't bother me. Neither do spiders. If there is a spider in our house, I'm the one who always gets called on to get rid of it. I will pick them up with my bare hands if I know they are not venomous.
I would probably call the super and leave! LOL
    sell the house!

especially if there has been a spider problem.
Just finish him off; get it done quick and easy.
    They'd froze in terror.

Does a dishwasher use less water then washing dishes by hands?

If it is then should the dishwasher be full or something?Does a dishwasher use less water then washing dishes by hands?
Yes, the dishwasher should be full for it to use less water. If you don't use many dishes, washing by hand (and turning the water off between rinsing dishes) can use less water.

In my family of 4, using the dishwasher would use less water if it weren't such a piece of junk that requires being run 3 times to clean a load, haha.Does a dishwasher use less water then washing dishes by hands?
Yes, and yes. But don't pack it full - water should be able to circulate easily around the dishes.
Yes your dishwasher uses less water than doing them by hand. You should always run it fairly full. If it's not full then you are wasting water by running it.
I didn't think so but my water company bill says yes.

How Do You Apply Your Dish Detergent When Washing Dishes?

Many people I know do it a little differently:

-some pour it directly onto a sponge or cloth

-some pour it directly into the sink filled with dishes

-some do both, directly on the sponge as well as in the sink

What do you do?How Do You Apply Your Dish Detergent When Washing Dishes?
I pour the water in and squirt the dish soap to make bubbles. As for the actual cleaning, sponges and clothes get stinky so I use these dish wipe things from palmolive and throw them out after each load of dishes. Best invention for dishes by far!How Do You Apply Your Dish Detergent When Washing Dishes?
I run the water to fill the sink and add it to the flowing stream. If I have something with a lot of gunk on I apply directly to the gunk as well.
I squirt it into the sink, run some hot water and add a big spoonful of 20 Mule Team borax for added suds and soft water. I like to soak my dishes for about 15 minutes before hand washing them. The warm water feels nice when it's 20 below zero in the cabin.
I do all of these things, as well as sometimes squirting it right into the dish (really greasy pots). It all depends on the situation, and how dirty the dishes are.
If there are alot of dishes to be washined, I pour it in the dish water. If there are only a few dishes, then I put the soap on the dish rag.
add it to directly to the wash pan, unless it's something that doesn't fit, then I add it directly to the item.
    Put them in the dishwasher.
empty the sink, block the drain, start the water and pour the soap in the stream of water. instant bubbles!
I put it in the appropriate dispenser in the dishwasher.
I pour it in when the sink is filling with water. Makes a lot of bubbles.
i put it on the sponge directly.
i run hot water then add the dish washing liquid, then I add the dishes or sometimes I just pour a little dish washing liquid directly on what needs to be washed especially if its small.Either way I do it my dishes come clean. i use dishwasher sometimes to it depends on what I am washing.
I have a sunglow sponge on a handle that i love to use.
Squirt it on, rub with hands
